Hi I am new to the site, and have recently purchased a 2nd hand 2000 1.8 Petrol 5 door K Series Freelander, which My other half has done a lot of fiddly jobs on to get it up to scratch i.e. refitting broken rear door handle, replaced 2 rear brake cylinders adjust handbrake and so on, yesterday I went to get replacement VDU, and Propshafts to put the vehicle back to 4wd as someone for some reason had removed them before I acquired the vehicle, when I got home with the parts I tried, and tried to start the Vehicle in order to drive it up on to ramps for my other half to fit the VDU, and Propshafts, but it would not start.
My other half then proceeded to check the ignition system to find there was a strong spark at each plug, and we could hear the fuel pump priming, and could smell fuel, but it still wouldn't start then today we took the fuel line off going to the Fuel Filter to see if Fuel was being pumped up to the Filter (nothing) then we realised that we couldn't hear the pump when we turned ignition on anymore so we took pump out, and run 12v straight to the pump, and it worked put it back in and run 12v directly to it again, and nothing it seems as though if the pump is fully submersed in Petrol it won't work.
it has been sluggish to start since we had the vehicle, could anyone tell me if they have experienced the same problem, and is it a faulty pump, and could the fact of the sluggish starting have been a tell tail sign that the pump was breaking down?
any help would be much appreciated
Thank You

Fixed, Injectors were clogged my other half gave them a squirt each of Brake Cleaner, a blast with an Airline, as my eldest Son put 12v across each of them a bit of crap flew out of them, and then they sprayed fine. He put it all back together, and Success (touch wood) it's running fine : ) Inertia Switch had also tripped out, but all ok at moment Thanks for your help Freelance much appreciated.

LOL think it may be time to close my account as Obviously a lot of Arrogance here, as for Electrical sockets my other half is a Electrician so he'd know all about that : ) Dangerous ? a mate of ours is a Mechanic in a big name Garage, and he agreed that it's a way of cleaning them through without being ripped off by Companies who tell you otherwise in order to line their pockets, and seeing it's supposed to be such a bad thing to do I see no-one as advised as to why, and with what evidence ? Hear say is NOT evidence.

As long as they aren't connected to the fuel rail it shouldn't hurt! It may pay to check in future that they actually are 12v injectors tho not 5v ones cos you could've buggered them! Luckily on them they are but not on all landys!

They're hardly high pressure on a petrol........
You run more of a risk of recking your ecu if powering up injectors with them connected up.
I'd be very wary trying that trick on a diesil though, not that you would put 12v across a diesil injector to test it anyway.........

You could with common rail! Get that wrong and it'll kill you! The pressure is high enough to inject diesel straight thru your skin into your blood stream, leading to death! But normal petrol injection is relatively safe, unless you have high pressure petrol injection of course which works on the same principal as common rail diesel! But with spark plugs of course:)

Oh yes all know all the woo's of common rail high pressure pumps. I do believe most systems run at around 2000 bar...... Had it drummed into us on the old Jag/Lanny courses!!! And yes if you are unfortunate enough to be "squirted at" shall we say, then wave goodbye to a limb or 2 or as you say your life.
Leave common rail to the experts. Apart from vauxhall who decided to use it on petrol's!!

They were out of circuit when it was done, and we knew about the Difference with the Diesel, and Petrol Injectors, but the fault is back and it seems to be the inevitable Head Gasket as it did start perfect yesterday, but no chance today. and it has used a Litre and half of coolant, we also noticed a lot of steam from the Exhaust even when it had been running for an hour or so, so it looks like Engine out, and replace Head Gasket, and probably change Cambelt (as we have no idea when that needs replacing), and Clutch as well as it is nearly at top pf Pedal : ( back to the good old spare Pajero we have for now : )
