Fans running whilst the engine is off. Help!

Hi guys.

I arrived home from work today and parked up my P38 (2.5 DSE). A few hours later I was on my way back out and realised that the fans at the front of the car where running. I started the engine, switched it off, and that helped for a while but it has happened again.

They are definately not staying on when I switch off the ignition and so are starting back up at some point.

I may be mistaken (very new to Land Rover ownership) but I think they are the kenlowe fans. It is definately not the main radiator fan.

Anyone got any ideas??

The fans behind the grill are aircon fans sounds like something is a miss, have you downloaded a copy of rave it has all the wireing diagrams in it

Are they in front of the radiator (a/c fans) or engine side ?:)
 
If it's the two fans mounted in a plastic frame then they are are the air conditioning fans. As a short term measure, and to preserve your battery, there is an inline plug and socket about a foot away from them so you can unplug them.
Some people have wired these as an additional cooling aid for the engine so you might want to have a look round for any extra wiring and perhaps a sensor strapped to a water pipe somewhere.
 
If it is the a/c fans, depending on the year of your motor, they come on if the engine is overheating. If they are aftermarket fans to replace your viscous fan then again check you are not overheating then look at the temperature control setting.
 
It only requires one wire rubbed through to bring the fans on but it shouldn't happen with the ignition off. I'd check the fuse box for signs/smells of burning.
 
On the petrol engines the fans will run with ignition off for engine cooling, but not on the diesel as far as i know.
 
There is no fan run-on on the diesels. They are purely for the air con, unless they've been 'got at'.

Aircon fans come on in overheat situations on 1999 and on diesels. Petrols always had this. Aircon fans will run in an overheat situation with engine turned off on petrol cars, but as far as i know not on diesels even the ones with the extra sensor and over heat circuit.
 
Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. My RR is a 1996 model, but all is well now as it seems to have repaired itself. Never got around to finding out what happened, but the engine temp seemed fine. My RR has a lot of modifications on it made by previous owners, the majority of which I am clueless about, so as you say that is the probable issue!
