fan coupling

whats an easy way to remove the fan coupling? i havn't got the proper tool and just wondered if theres a simple solution? i know its a reversed thread before anyone says that

im just finding it a pain getting a spanner on the nut and stopping the pulley spinning

I helps if you remove the fan first (4x10mm bolts)? then you can get in better with a spanner

Make yourself a 32mm spanner out of a piece of old leaf spring with an angle grinder. (that is assuming it is a 200/300tdi you are talking about).

The TD5 has a 36 mm size and is a Right Hand Thread. The V8 is also a right hand thread.

The trick is to look at the fan and undo it in the direction of rotation.

thanks for the help, ill get onto making a spanner, havnt got any old leaf springs but ill find a peice of thinnish steel. the 4x 10ml bolts on the pulley side? not the alen keys on the fan side?

i managed without using the special spanner, just used me pipe grips, no damage , no problem, the trouble i had was holding the pulley still while i undid the nut, i got round that by tying a knot in the broken belt ( not the easiest thing to knot....) round the pulley and then twisting it up with a screwdriver, that held the bugger still

If you have a thin 32 mm spanner, you give the spanner a belt with LR tool no 1 in the direction of rotation and the nut will come loose (or should come loose). Then you just spin the fan off. I once had to hold the belt with a pair of mole grips but this is very unusual. The LR manual does show another tool to hold the pulley by the 4 x 10mm bolt heads, but I haven't needed to make one of those yet. If the belt is broken and gone one might need the tool, although we have old belts lying around that can be used.

ps the reason I used an old leaf spring is that it is very strong and does not open out easily.

hello, well i spent an hour or so making a couple of tools out of some 3mm steel. which is a bit too thin and just bent, also even more stupid was the fact in my excitement i completly forgot that it was a reverse thread and spent all the time trying to unscrew it anti-clockwise

what an idiot! well thanks for the help i'll try out your advice tommorrow!

The 300tdi has two left-hand threads, both to do with the fan. The bolt that holds on the fan idler puley is obviously also a LHT as you have to turn it anticlockwise to release the fan belt, and clockwise to undo the bolt. I know of two people who have sheared this bolt trying to get the pulley off to change the 6203 bearing. And then you are stuffed, because if you replace the bolt with a normal RHT you can't turn it anticlock to get the fan belt off.

I removed mine recently and I found a hole in the side wall (as opposed to the face) of the hub (about 10mm or so). I put the spanner on the 32mm or whatever nut to and placed a short 10mm bolt into the hole. I then used a chisel and a hammer to strike the 10mm bolt, this stopped it spinning every time I tried to unscrew it. Once it was moving, is came off with no trouble, and I did not need to strike the 10mm bolt too hard but I had spent ages trying before I worked out the technique above.
