so, I keep losing water out me bottle:

is it meant to have that hole in it?

the radiator is down 1/4 pint every time I check it-should I change tank cap?

that should have a pipe coming off the top running dpwn side of bottle as an overflow , but if your loosing coolant id look at cooling system ie is rad hot all over ,thermostat working ,water pump etc or head gasket

recently removed and back flushed rad so I know she's flowing well, new stat installed and engine temp stays bang in middle of gauge.

I'll repair bottle and see how she goes then, I only get a bit of white smoke on start and she's clear as a whistle after that..
maybe I should get a coolant exhaust gas checker thingy magig

ps how do I check pump? remove top rad hose and start engine to see if it pumps out?

as good as any check but failure apart from obvious seal and bearing failure is rare

i seem to remember an integral raised ridge on outside of bottle as the overflow vent.

I'll check but if it is i'll seal the hole up with some black silicon.

Are you sure you're not just overflowing it. The water expands when it gets hot

when I check rad the water is below top filaments so I top rad so water just covers all the filaments.

expansion bottle I fill to bottom if neck..

either way my mod will stop it sloshing out of hole :)

If its working correctly your rad should be brimmed full with no air all the time with water being sucked back in from expansion bottle as engine cools. Check that the pipe from the rad cap to the bottle is sound with no leaks and that the rad cap has its rubber seal intact.

When filling cold I find anything more than two thirds full in the expansion bottle and it will sick some out when the engine gets warm, it is supposed to do that.

I fitted a new cap recently and the increased pressure found several hose joints to leak from so keep an eye on them for awhile.
