The flexible joint on the downpipe is rattling/loose and l need to replace it.

(2005 Defender TD5)

l have a spare in the shed off my 110 that’s done about 70,000 miles but how will l know if the CAT is still working on it. What’s the symptoms of non-working CAT on a Defender apart from failing the MOT on emissions?

l’ve also got a Britpart down pipe with CAT that’s done about 25,000 miles.
How long do these things last?

So far as I can recall, the MOT test is only a smoke test - no emissions test like petrol engines. And checks to see that emissions equipment like cats, egr's and dpf's have not been tampered with or removed. I'll upload the relevant pages from the MOT manual later.

Ignore the text above 8.2.2 on page 9, thats for petrol engines. On page 11 under test procedure it mentions some figures and a manufacturers plate. The plate is usually on the bulkhead and is about 1 inch square vinyl sticker with a number such as 1.5, 0.74 for example. If this figure is lower than the default value for the year, it is worth "losing" the plate so they have to test to the higher figure ;).

And so long as it’s present the vehicle should pass.

Google DOC cat, they pretty much last forever and being a derv it will get smoke tested at mot, so long as std tune will pass the test with ease.
