Guys even when it's just ticking over there is a lot of smoke and now the battery is dead as nelson!!!

Usual cause of black smoke is an inbalance of fuel and air. Could be a boost leak.

So check the boost hoses for splits

Sorry I haven't got back sooner will I have been in the middle of getting new battery and the starter recon and fit ....

the smoke has now died down and mechanic has said there is no boost leaks ... any thoughts?

Sounds like burning oil, check the engine breather system, known to give trouble.
could be injector fault iirc they at known to cause smoke
