Hi all

Hope you can help I have a 1986 ex mod landy and it's currently in having a 300tdi conversion I wanted to know if I could fit a snorkel as it only has wing top vents would I need to fit a wing side vent like the later landys?

Cheers
Rory

I am considering the very same thing as you.
I have a ex mod 90 with 300tdi.
I currently have a cone filter fitted but am going to fit the old 2.5na air box on a bracket bolted to the timing chest, just above the injection pump.
I am debating making my own snorkel using stainless tube along the top of the wing then down through it towards the front, similar to the mod type fitted to the left wing.
I am looking forward to seeing what other replies you get to see what other people have done regarding air boxes and snorkels etc on engine conversions such as ours.
Sorry to not offer any real help.
What air box do you have and where is it sited? This will also have a bearing on your snorkel options.....
Rich

Or you could look for or make a MOD spec wing top snorkel like mine

See photo. I can take better ones if needed.

I have a 1986 ex MOD 110, with a 200Tdi engine but with a 300Tdi airbox mounted on the NSF wing, and a pipe going over the engine to a Southdown snorkel on the OSF wing top. I think your 300 will have the airbox mounted next to the engine on the opposite side to the manifolds and turbo, so in theory you can do the same and just have a neater installation with much shorter pipe runs.

Don't be afraid to cut a hole in your wing to fit a snorkel - that's what the PO of my 87 90 did while fitting a 300tdi

They didn't however fit any kind of air filter so the intake feed is currently direct from the snorkel into the turbo - something I'm currently rectifying.

How you have that air box mounted to the wing top like that looks exactly like I need to do - what sort of mount have you used, can you upload any more detail photos of that fixing?

Excellent thanks!

You definitely need to fit a filter as that is really bad news and asking for trouble!!

Oh I know, it already did cause trouble, the cyclone breather system clogged up, oil started going each way and everywhere - I found what must have been pints of oil in the intercooler. This poor old girl has had 14 previous owners, and it would seem I'm the first person in a long while to come along and treat her with some love - I'm enjoying undoing all the mistakes though.

It's a Steve Parker kit...expensive but good. Have a look at their website...it basically bolts where the washer bottle fits. More info here.

Ok, I'm either being blind, or it's no longer on their website - I can't find the kit you've used on there. Any chance you've got a direct link to the exact kit handy?

I don't think they will TBH as I think I asked something similar. The mount is the easy bit...rubber mounts, a flat plate and some really big jubilee clips would probably work. The tricky bit is the big U-bend pipe going back to the turbo...again you might be able to fabricate or bodge something here.

I will say that since ripping out all the bodged exhaust and inlet pipework the performance, and even the smoke produced, has been dramatically improved (actually the inlet stuff made more of a difference than the exhaust) However if you currently run no filter that might not happen!

Three hundred sheets :eek::eek: I bought a 300tdi one including brackets for thirty odd quid off ebay and then made a bracket to bolt it to the timing cover. You lot must be made of money

Yeah, it is bloody eye wateringly expensive, I'll give you that. If I was some kind of gifted welder I would have had a go a fabricating the metal pipework (I suspect that is the expensive bit TBH). My old air cleaner was such a bodge, and had caused me so many issues I just "got to that point" and said sod it. It is nicely made and was fitted in an evening. As my 110 is a "lifer" and was cheap enough in the first place I kinda justifed it to myself. I was also convinced that if I went down the Glencoyne turbo clocking way I was going to f**k it up and casue £300 of damage anyway!

It's a good looking air filter installation no doubt and the SP bits I used were good quality, if expensive. I found clocking the turbo to be pretty easy to be honest - not to say I wasn't shi**ing myself a bit when I started though. I had the wings off, which made removing it much easier. In fact I'd recommend removing the wings to anyone installing a different engine.

Mines coming along now engines all in just needs plumbing in :D I can't wait to get her back bored of driving the father inlaws 2015 defender 110 way to quiet.
I want to do the snorkel on mine before I decide what colour to paint mine
