Hi Folks my name is Pete, I am just 50 and have had various experiences with Landy's since a child.

I drive them off road in Northern Kenya a couple of times a year.

I have been offered a 110 nonturbo diesel lwb 1986 for £1500.

Is this a good price for one that is not too pretty but is driven daily ?

What are the tell tale signs and what should I look for ask about when buying it?

What I really want to know are the ownership costs eg whats the mpg like?
Insurance I believe is cheap but tax about £260?

I was thinking of using it mainly as a second vehicle for camping and shifting stuff as I am a member of a community farm in South Wales.
Can I update the awful drivers seat...tough this one doesn't slide about like the one in Samburu..oh yes and it has an expansion tank for the rad and the gear box isn't held on with a jubilee clip and a nail..

Many thanks
Pete

Evening Pete! and welcome to the loonyzone :)
Might not be a bad buy if it is in good nick. Can you post any pics?
Big issue with these is chassis and bulkhead rust, followed by engine and transmission wear. Check the chassis all over for rust, especially outriggers, spring hangers and rear crossmember, look for substandard repairs too! Check bulkhead inside wings and in footwells, door pillars can rot too.
Some DIY expertise will be a real help when it comes to buying and running one of these, working on them is half the fun :D

the price of " roadworthy" defenders is a bit ridiculous these days , so 1500 for most of what you need isnt too bad It depends a bit on what your transport budget is. Its a balancing act between buying a low cost with known probs and then fixing , or spending more and finding unkowns and then not having the budget to fix up.
Chassis and bulkhead rust , followed by smoky engine , or half dead gearbox are the big concerns , anything else can prettywell be lived with . HTSH

putting your location might go someway with someone willing to help you assess the vehicle
