I've read up and taken the advice from this forum on who to approach for European Breakdown Cover. I've even gone as far as getting quotes from some of them. However, when I double check with the insurers I have found that all of those tried so far will not cover my 110 CSW because of the number of seats. It rolled out of Solihull a 12 seater, and like many, I have removed the centre seat and fitted a cubby box so it's now 11. I've even offered to remove the bench seats in the back for the duration of my trip but, due to some mentally subnormal logic used by insurers, they still can't cover me as 'the vehicle was designed to have more than 7 seats'. I can't be the only person to try to get cover on a 12 seater station wagon. Can anybody help? BTW, it's 14 years old too just to add something else to the mix.

I'm trying to get breakdown cover. Insurance is fine. At least, it is until you need to be indemnified against loss and then you find out what you really bought.

I did try my insurers and they won't/can't add cover mid-term. This is SureTerm who, I thought, were a reputable bunch. Why they can't take my money is anyone's guess but they do seem to be agreeable to the idea of changing my premium mid-term to take into account my Allisport Intercooler upgrade. Adrian Flux don't offer breakdown without an accompanying insurance policy. I tried a specialist minibus insurer as I thought that might be the way to go, given the objections to the number of seats but they won't offer breakdown cover on vehicles over 11 years old. So, I'm in a quandary. 2 weeks till holiday, me, wifey and 4 and 2 year old kids going to France. I wanted the peace of mind of having breakdown cover but maybe I'll have to wing it.

Just get breakdown cover on it as a landrover utility. It will then be covered for up to a max of 8 passengers the same as any other car. If it was still a 12 seater and you broke down in france or wherever with 12 people in the vehicle it just means that 4 of them would have to find their own way back.

I have a 12 seater 110- have breakdown insurance with More than- disclosed number of seats and no probs for last 4 years-

when gearbox went couple of years ago they sent out big recovery truck- put beast on back and took me and 6 kids in the pick up cab ( although technically I was meant to leave one on the hard shoulder apparantly- the guy took pity on me and took us all home :)

AA european breakdown is excellent....costs me 98 quid for the year on me 110 SW. They flew us back from portugal one year and flew me back out to collect the car after it was repaired. And the next year me premium was cheaper.

Join the Caravan Club and then take their breakdown cover. I did.

Then buy a caravan. Then start having caravan holidays in the rain. Then fall out with the wife because your spending too much time together in a cramped space. Then start thinking about all the foreign holidays your missing out on.....

I did!

Thank you for your advice regarding membership of the caravan club. Given my position with regards to caravans I think it's more likely that I join Al Qaeda (only joking Echelon - don't come knocking for me) or stick wasps up my arse.

I think I might just take the regular cover as suggested by Ratty. I did get the AA to quote. £190 for a fortnight. Seems steep.

He was talking out of his arse. What he should have done was to call up for a second truck. Your breakdown cover will cover you for up to 8 people providing the vehicle is designed or legally adapted to carry that many. The stoopid thing is that in most cases recovery trucks can carry 6 passengers. So if you have 8 people in your landy it would take 2 trucks. 2 x 6 = 12 yet the breakdown clubs still won't cover the extra 4 people.
