I am posting this question here because my web search and communication with authorities so far has not been giving me a clear answer. Question is: Can somebody outside EU travel to and tour EU countries on a Land rover series?
As far as I know vehicles have to meet Euro 5 standards, but how about older cars or trucks which are originally from European countries and many examples of them must be still on the road in Europe (such as Volkswagens and Land rovers)?
tx

Vehicles these days have to be built according to Euro5 standards but there's nothing stopping anyone from driving older vehicles around the continent. Hell people do overland trips in old Series, Defenders and Discos all the time

As long as you are IN THE CONTINENT that seems like a logical thing but supposing that you start your journey from Turkey and plan to drive to France and back can they refuse you entry? I find it very illogical not to mention stupid but this is what a truck driver was telling me. I wanted to check and make sure.

Mate nobody gives a **** about what engine you have when you drive through europe. What your worried about is just not the reality. Euro 5 is on newly manufactured vehicles sold in european union countries. It doesnt apply to older vehicles just driving about! That would be ludicrous! !!

It all depends on how long you are over before you need to register, I think six months is the time in the UK but may be different elsewhere. You will need a log book for the motor an inspection (MOT in UK, not sure what you have in Canada) and valid insurance. I travelled round Europe a while back in an old ('74 but looks older) 11m coach and had very little hassle except in Czech republic and former Yugoslavian borders I did run the guards foot over in one and the guard pulled his rifle in the other because I went in the wrong lane!

However, most countries are in the EU now and so borders are a lot less of a hassle. You will run into more hassles if you go further East into say Ukraine etc as they require extra insurance, bail bonds and all that hassle. I'd ring the Canadian AA or similar and see if they have an overseas dept to help.

Breakdown cover should be pretty cheap in the EU and again the CAA might be able to help, you may even get it free with insurance...the breakdown cover you will get varies by country (France pretty hopeless in my experience - a bunch of idiots who try and rip you off. In Germany they turn up with a truck full of the right parts and rebuild your car by the side of the road)

Have fun!

Went round central Europe a few years back in a 1974 beetle without any trouble. As long as the vehicle's roadworthy in the country of origin it's generally not a problem.

The only thing is some cities are starting to have low emission zones (such as London) and if your landy is classed as a commercial vehicle (which all except station wagons will be) you might be restricted as to where you can go in these places, especially in a diesel.

As previously mentioned- emissions standards depend on the year of first registration- old vehicles aren't generally required to meet new standards.
