Eventualy decided to up the tickover speed on my TD as it was running so slow that the whole landy was shaking about, and the pipes to the injectors keep snapping!

It was set this slow when i had the injector pump overhalled about 9 months ago.

But now it is running at a nice purring rate (at a guess around 900 rpm) it is fine, but if i rev it up out of gear it does not return to the same speed it was before. If i then put it into gear and slow the engine down with the clutch (with the hand break on) it will return to the speed I set, and then continue at this speed until the engine is reved up again - quite anoying:mad:

The tickover speed was set using the stop screw that adjusts the resting place of the main lever on top of the CVA pump (not the fuel boost one as somepeople do and then wonder why it won't start :) )

Is this a sign that my injectors may be leaking! (I suspect they may be)

Or is this a sign something else is wrong or is it just normal:(

Thanks

It sounds like your understanding of the Lucas CAV injection pump is not quite right and may be leading to these problems.

The tickover speed was set using the stop screw that adjusts the resting place of the main lever on top of the CVA pump (not the fuel boost one as somepeople do and then wonder why it won't start :) )

That is probably your problem, you must use the IDLE speed adjuster, the Lucas CAV injection pump has a cold start system which engages at LOW RPM's probably down about 60rpm or something. IF you adjust it via the resting place of the main throttle control you will disable this and you will not get accurate idle speeds. You want to screw IN the little bolt on the adjuster that sits up against the fuel RETURN line, you can test the positions by sticking feeler guages and things in between the union and the bolt.

First thing is get the throttle sitting back in the fully home position. Also because it's set like this at the moment and will not return to the same idle speed I suspect the mechanism may be sticking slightly.

Thanks - Ill try that and see how things go - I was told it was the other way around, and not to adjust the other screw, but your explnation makes more sence:D

As for the screw i adjusted the lever never reached this how it was before because it was so far away that the cable stopped it before it got to the screw. It may well be sticking a bit as the seals were just replaced (a bugger of a job to do:mad: with it on the car) but did get all the way back against the cable without a problem.

I'll set it back to fully closed position, and then adjust the idel speed with the other adjuster.

Thanks

James

Sorted running perfectly now, and the whole engine seems happier for not ideling at such a slow speed.

Thanks for the help.
Just need to change that fuel lift pump and all will be as it should.
