Any thoughts on what i should have to pay to get someone to take out a td and put a reasonable defender 200tdi (or 300tdi) in a 90? (cost of labour and engine and all necessary bits!)

The td works OK so could possibly be ebayed if there's a demand.

depends how you do it - you'll have to budget anything between £250 - £450 for the engine (assuming it's a disco 200) + £120 for the downpipe + £20 to £150 fer a leccy fan (scrappy or shop bought) - pipework can be around £100 (is you use good quality stuff) or free if you have some suitable hanging around - another £50 for oils and service items

and that's before you've added in labour (which might be free if you DIY) - you'd expect the job to take at least 4 days to complete, you'd probably have it running on the second day but ironing out any problems and tidying up and finding the right pipe works could be time consuming - also not included in the costs mentioned would be other parts you may wish to change (very sensible to do so) at the same time such as the complete clutch assem

a while back i had a Tdi put in one of mine by a local LR garage as i didnt have the time due to too much else going on (and i needed it back within a few days) and i paid just under a grand and that included a lot of parts and a lot of little fidly jobs

hope this elps

Thanks Sean, that's kind of what i hoped only i was quoted about £2.5K for a swap by a local well reputed indy and i thought that was a bit steep, when you should be able to get the whole car for that! How long should it take a garage to do it? (bearing in mind i'm probably going to have to go up country for it)

Moores at st Wenn.

I will try and have a chat with yer mate when i'm out that way, it'd be good to know what to expect to pay time / labour wise, i.e. how many hours labour to expect to do a good job.

it depends on what you were getting for your 2.5K - there is an official LR kit that is designed for exactly this upgrade, i've never got a price for it (but if it's still avliable it's bound to be flipping expensive) but when fitted you are able (via LR dealers etc) to get a full LR warrenty on the work

when you asked for a price did he just say "yes we can do that for 2.5K"?

did he itemise exactly what he was going to do?

for that price i'd expect a fully (properly) reconditioned engine and a warrenty

OK
btw - he aint me mate! he's a funny bugger, but really knows his suff and is cheep(ish).
his missus is OK, but dun't know much about Landys.

i'd say 2 days, but that's if they are on the ball and have acess to everything that's needed - but you'll not get anyone to commit to that sort of timescale simply because there's always a few unknowns that crop up

if you DIY it's supprising how much of your time is spent running round looking for parts/pipes/wiring because you'll always find you'll need 3 foot of wire when you only have 2 foot on your shelf

Pretty much, he said it usually works out 2300-2500. He gets his engines from a source up country and says they're very good but not reconditioned. I guess there would be some kind of warranty on the labour and parts as he's a dealer, so he would have to price that in too, but the thought of 2.5K made it completely non-viable (the car's OK but not worth that much just for an engine - maybe engine, chassis and gearboxes!) - i guess at that cost it would be better to flog it for whatever and plough the money into getting a proper 200 with reasonable boxes and chassis etc. But for a grand i'd probably do it tomorrow! (except i need the car for work!)

well if there nowt wrong with your engine heres what i'd do

plan to do it over a bank holiday, if it's on a Monday take the previous Friday off so you have 4 full days to finish

buy yourself a engine hoist, ebay less than £60 usually or free if yer name is yella

start looking for an engine now, preferably buy one that you can see and hear running - usually will be out of a rusted Disco

read and understand all of the numerous articles that have been written on this interweb

start buying the assorted bits you need - one of these days i'll put together a list

so by the time the bank holiday is here you'll be fully prepared to DIY and to save yourself enough for a 2 weeks in costa del sun burn
