whilst driving my rr ive noticed that it struggles at around 2500-3000rpm on kickdown
you can hear what sounds like a chuffing noise when it gets to 3000ish
almost like something is been blown
really dont know where to begin with this
it starts first time no bother and drives good
ive had the fluid and filter in the box changed
its a 99 4.0
also has anyone here bought a lynx diagnostic kit as im interested in what their thoughts on it are
can the fuel trims be reset with the lynx?http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=2634799

Lynx is an unknown quantity and the support does not seem to be too good at the moment. I expect it will be good when the bugs are sorted. For the moment Nanocom Evo is better and yes it can reset the fuel trims:D.

Plus the Lynx is locked to a VIN. Unless you get the daft money version.

I hate to be the one to pint this out, but it sounds a bit like your head gasket may be leaking. If it were the exhaust, I wouldn't expect that you could feel a significant lack of power. Weak compression from a blown gasket would do that though...

+1 on HGF,

When mine went it started with a rattle / chuffing sound under load around 2500rpm then lost alot of power. Could be a manifold but I wouldn't expect you'd lose much power with a leaking manifold?
I'd get a compression check done.

The "chuffs" can be caused my the mass airflow sensor giving incorrect readings usually resulting in a weak mixture. I have a lynx - it can reset fuel trims - I can't see any evidence of vin locking. But I'm not saying it isn't vin locked.

ive got my neighbour coming round later who owns a garage so hoping he can tell me whats wrong
last time i done head gaskets was on my old mk2 2ltr escort
just had a look at rave and they dont look that hard to do
got 3 weeks of work soon so might be able to get it done then if it is hg

I did the head gaskets on my old 3.5 Classic and also got the heads machined. Easy enough job, much like doing your Escort except you have two heads to take off. ;) I think I took 8 or 9 hours and many cups of tea & Kit-Kats.

well had my neighbour come round and hes baffled as to what the noise could be
if i feed the power in slowly it will pull great but it only happens when you put your foot down hard
could really do with getting some live data, anyone around birmingham that could help with diagnostics?

i done a test before and got 50-60psi across all eight, which i thought was low
but that was done just by spinning the engine over
should i have the accelerator pedal pushed to the floor then spin it over

No, throttle position makes no difference in a compression test. It should be done by spinning the starter with ignition or fuel disabled - you do not want the engine running on the other 7 cylinders while you're doing the test!!:D
You could be in luck though, as I'm thinking it may also be your TPS (throttle position sensor) from your description. It may be cutting fuel supply due to a fault in the sensor, leading to one or more cylinders running lean or not at all.

I've already told you the most likely cause for your problem.

bit of an update on this problem
my lynx diagnostic kit turned up yesterday so i thought id give it a whirl
well it looks like ive got a misfire fault across cylinders 2,3,5 and 8
5 was worse than the other three
now if im right 2,3,5,8 are driven from one coil
i had both coil packs changed not long ago so im not sure where to look now
new leads and plugs was also fitted

I replaced my O2 sensors and not long after I started to lose power and miss fire, when tested the O2 sensors had failed, replaced them with bosch ones and hey presto back to normal driving and no error codes. May be a long shot but does sound similar symptoms.
