Hello, I have a Spanish diesel series 3. 1980. It is on an historic plate which means it has to remain original. Now, some years ago it dropped a valve, this was repaired, but the front cylinder is badly scored. I want to repair this. I was told it is possible to use a block from a 2.5 and change over timing gear.? Is it possible? Simple? Will it give me a little more umph? The cost of a 2.5 block and a new sleeve and work etc are similar… any advice?

A two and a half has very little more to offer than a two and a quarter. Id simply re sleeve the original as they are getting more rare now.

The other problem is metric and imperial fittings. The 2.5 will be metric and if your old engine is then great you can swap parts but it gets a bit more hmm if the old engine is imperial threads. Like Bobsticle says keep it original if you can.

It is easier to change the engine for the whole 2.5 NA.
They are a bit more powerful, and a bit better, than a 2286 cc diesel.
On the downside, I think 2.5 NA have a plastic belt instead of a timing chain, if the engine comes out of a Land Rover. Taxi engines I think have chains anyway.

Like they say^^^^^, with classic prices rising, it might be better to stay with original engine for the relatively small gains involved.
