Hi There. I'm new here. I found a similar problem where a members engine had seized but he didn't make the mistake of bump starting!!

My landy was running fine and the other night I parked up for an hour and when I went to restart the engine seemed to be seized.

When pressing the start button the starter motor would engage for a split second but would not turn the engine. Initially I thought flat battery or "stuck" starter motor but when I tried to bump start in second the car would just stop in its tracks and the engine would not turn over. It was as though the engine was seized. Obviously I didn't think it was seized as it was working fine when I last ran it an hour earlier.

I tried a couple times to bump at walking speed and then tried a bit more speed and bumped it in third gear. The engine started for a few seconds but sounded horrific before cutting out. It would then turn on the start button but would not start so I bump started it again.

It currently runs but has a tapping / knocking noise.

I took it to a garage and they said it all seems fine - oil level, pressure, not miss firing, etc. They were unable to explain why it may have seized up and didn't know what the knocking was. They said I may have bent something trying to bump it and that to start stripping it down to locate the problem could potentially cost £0,000's.

Responses to a similar post on here had suggested the head gasket may have gone and fluid entered the block causing it to seize.

Any advice would be greatfully recieved.

welcome to landy zone ,
it would be good idea to mention what engine /year/millage etc your motor is ,

one thing for sure its going to be costly,,

Hi and welcome. Hmm I don't know if head gasket failure would be a prime suspect in this case, and I haven't heard FL2's being prone to this with the peuuughghot engines. If it was fine, then seized, and is now yammering and sounding like a bag of ****e then I also think you've bent a valve or something. There was a kinda similar thread recently which I've managed to find:

Sound similar to your story at all? But any garage that says all is well when it sounds like a meat grinder is staffed by muppets.

Prepare to spend alot of dosh unless it's under warranty :(. You might get lucky but it sounds nasty - engine grenade nasty.

Will.

Thanks for the advice so far, including the not so constructive responses!!
The car is 2007 and has now done 105k miles.
When I initially bump started it ran for a few seconds before stalling and sounded like a bag of nails. It currently runs fine and I'm doing 70 miles a day to work. It has a tapping noise - not really a knocking noise.
It also sends out a puff of blue smoke when its first started - i know most diesels do this but mine didn't.

rekon your best taking the head off 'n having a look-see ..
that 'tapping' could someday result in one almighty and final 'kaboom' ..

with what you describe am wondering if it's valve related ..
or a broken piston ring ..

Thanks again guys for the advice.
I took the vehicle tomy nearest landrover dealer. Basically all they can say is that there is an "internal failure" and all they will do is fit a new engine. This will cost circa 10k !!!
I will repost and see if anyone can recomend a recon engine supplier.
