This light has come on my td5 today while reversing 25 or 30 meters I switched off the ignition then started it again it came on then went off after 3 or 4 seconds as its supposed too. Iv just taken her for a drive now 10 miles or so on the motorway and it all seems fine and the the light stayed off. Any ideas what the cause might be? Its to wet out to have a look now but could it be oil getting to the ecu?

First I'd check all connectors are clean and secure.
Check the ECU earth point for corrosion and clean if needed.
Check your battery in the key fob as well - my ECU light played up for a while until I changed the battery in the fob.

Thanks for the fast reply Shifty Ill check in the morning. It aint the key though no cl or anything fancy on my wagon

Yeah no CL on mine either but the key fob works the imobiliser by being in close proximity to the steering colum. The buttons are for the alarm but the imobiliser also works on the same fob.
When you turn the ignition on it looks for a signal from the fob otherwise the engine wont fire. If you take the fob off your key ring and move it away from the ignition by about 18 inches the engine wont fire. It has to be close to the ignition lock where the sensor is. Once the engine is running you can chuck it out the window but when you come to restart you'll have a problem.
Stops some scrote getting a key cut or breaking the ignition and driving your motor away without the fob.

From left to right- ignition, doors and fuel cap, no fob, like I said nothing remotely fancy:)

So no imobiliser or alarm then. Strange on a TD5.
It's either a dodgy connection or an intermittent fault code which the ECU should log.
You need to find someone with the software to read the ECU and diagnose it.
Many Indy garages can read the ECU and let you know what it has logged.

i would be VERY worried about leaving my landy parked up without an immobiliser on it. I'd get a clutch claw or disc lock for it ASAP. Where abouts are you slim jim? If you're in my neck of the woods i'll plug it in for you.;)

Thanks for the offer Ratty but we live in different countries (Ireland). I park an opel astra in front of it at night and that has an alarm and imobiliser. They could just bulldoze the car out of the way I soppose but I think that would be to much like work for them hope Im right Ill have look at connectors and ecu now and hope I find the problem, something like a lose earth would be a result :D

Iv got the injector harness they did;nt have a rocker cover gasket in stock so I hope I wont need one. I have the ECU in the house draining out and Iv done my best to clean up the red connector. Hope tommorow is dry Ill post how I get on good or bad

Job done, that step by step guide was excellent, it took me about 3 hours I think. There is sure to be oil still left in the engine harness though I wonder how long it will take for it all to drain as far as the ECU? Ill look at the connector again next weekend or should I check it before that? and thanks for all the advice so far

Thats worth trying Shifty thanks, its a shocking design fault no? If the ECU were higher than the engine it couldnt happen.
