Hi all, looking to pick up a freelander in the next week or so. Looking around my budget will stretch to a decent 05 ish petrol with around 50k which was ideal until I realised how bad the mpg is. Unfortunately that means I'm doubling the mileage to get a diesel in budget now so I guess what I'm asking is what kind of mileage are the td4s good for and at what point is it best to steer clear?

Thanks

hi stumpy, welcome to the forum.

pikey is right, petrol freelanders aren't the best, head gasket failure is pretty common amongst them, particularly the 1.8 petrol which is a K series engine.

td4 is a good engine (BMW), especially if treated to regular oil changes.

I have a td4 auto, still going strong at 96k, there are many more on here that are higher, some around the 150k mark, think there is even one or two with 200k plus.

as they get older, tends to be the ancilliaries which get cranky, fuel pumps etc, none of which are particularly expensive.

I get around 30mpg out of mine, mixture of around town and longer runs.

good luck with your quest, but would really avoid a petrol one.

oh, and have a look at this:

If you have the budget for an 05 petrol Freelander then the sensible option would be to go for the TD4 model, they are more reliable, quicker and have a bit better mpg, I have both petrol and diesel but only bought the petrol one because it was cheep although its been totally reliable :)

Comparison wise I get 31 mpg at best from my 1.8 petrol but 36 -37 from the TD4 but you dont have the HG issues of the petrol to worry about.

There are a few people on here with high mileage TD4s still going well - they have chains rather than a cambelt so one less thing to worry about

Check out this thread for mileage covered and good luck at finding a good one:)

Hi redhand thanks for the constructive reply, yeah that's what's I'm saying after first looking at them and seeing what I could afford I then looked more into the model and then found they were very poor on mpg etc which is why I'm asking about life of the diesels, I'm now looking at freelanders with 80+k on them for my budget

Red isnt warning you about MPG but about the head gasket failure they are renowned for!!! As others have stated, do a search! Also if you want more MPG from a diesel get a Mondeo!

Ok well thanks for the info, didn't research as far as the head gasket failure though because I'd already decided not to get a petrol before it even came to looking that far into it, that's why I was just interested in the diesels engine life span and always best to get it from the people who use them

Cheers
