Freelander 1 Engine keeps going into boost without pressing down and very poor mileage

Hi Folks,

Recently had issues with MIL on with loss of power on motorway, resolved after replacing the 2 egr solenoids, all hoses, and pump under rear wheel arch (BMW TD4).

Now I’m finding the engine keeps going into what sounds like surges of diesel/power to turbo when just cruising, and mileage is very low, like 20 mpg.

Any ideas at all welcomed!
Note it is a cheap bearmach pump, and egr solenoid is second hand.

What do you mean by surging? Does it speed up by itself, more than normal running? Or is under powered then picks up to normal, before dropping off again?
