"Engine Immobilised"

Over the past couple of days I have noticed that if I leave the car unlocked for about an hour or more, then try to start it I get the "Engine Immobilised" message displayed. This then requires the remote to be pressed before it will start.

I'm sure this is a new thing and that it would always start straight off before, I haven't had the low remote battery warning or anything else, so am a bit confused .

Does this happen to anyone else????

hmmm, interesting, what year P38 do you have?? From your username I thik you have a late one so having a look here...

Security and Alarm System Operation & Diagnosis on Range Rover 4.0/4.6/P38A

...reveals this...

On 1996 and later models with passive immobilization enabled (UK, Europe? but not North America or Australia), if the key is not inserted into the ignition within 30 seconds of unlocking with the remote handset or EKA procedure (see below), the BeCM reverts to the immobilized condition. The engine remains immobilized until the remote/key is inserted into the ignition, closing the "key in" switch and activating a "Passive Immobilization Coil" (Z270) around the barrel of the the ignition switch. The electromagnetic field from this coil excites a receiving coil in the remote key handset. If the remote is acting normally (for example, does not have a dead battery), it will then transmit a mobilization signal to the BeCM via the RF receiver. The BeCM then disarms the vehicle and remobilizes the engine.

Have you double checked the batteries in the remote?? If so then from the above statement I would guess at maybe a problem with the 'key in' switch or maybe the 'passive immobilisation coil'?? I dont really know but seeing as nobody else replied I thought I would :D

Thanks for the reply Wills.

Yes as you thought it's a '99 MY P38. I think the 'key in' switch is ok as I get the correct warning on the message centre if I open the door with engine off and key still in the ignition. I think I will change the remote batteries as a precaution, although as I said before I haven't seen the 'low remote battery' warning.

Thanks again for taking the time to research this for me.

Hi, this has just started to happen to me. I have had the usual lock out thing due to the receiver unit being interupted by other signals and thought that this was just another symptom. I havnt changed to the new receiver unit yet but thought that this might make a difference. if you find a cure please let me know. Thanks, Paul

HI ALL

I'm having abit of a problem like this, i have a 1995 P38 hse 4.6 petrol and drove the car all weekend stopping and starting until this morning came to go to work unlocked the door with the remote turned the ignition on to II waited till the lights went out and then tried to start it- nothing, locked it and unlocked with the remote still nothing its as if your trying to start it in gear
on the display it shows the change in gear as you move it up and down the box, got out put the EKA code in still the same, checked the voltage on the battery 12.8v as its only a month old, gave it a boost charge still nothing when you turn the key to start it the display and hevac display go out let go of the key and they come back on and it beeps at you to tell you that the keys are left in, had the rac bloke out he bridge the solinoid or the switch on the auto box, the engine turned over but didn't start.
i've run out of ideas and LR aren't very helpful they said they've never seen a P38 do that

where and what do i do next any positive replys

i had a similar experience on my 01 p38,i was parked near 2 jcb with breakers and digging up a road, the doors were not locked but the windows slightly down, same thing i then went to start and no go,could not even turn the engine, i then removed the key and set the alarm on lock then unlock and hey presto. that was the only time it done that to me and i think it was just the frequency of the breakers digging up the road and just being parked so close to them.

Hi.
My 2001 does this aswell (immobilizes engine if left unlocked) i just thought it does it to prevent anyone nicking the the car. And was part and parcel of the alarm system. I think its a handy feature. Its not a hassle to press the unlock on the fob to clear it.
P.S
Mine kicks in after a few minutes not an hour or so.

Sounds like you could have an earth fault, not all that helpful a reply as there are many earth returns in the electrical system, but could be worthwhile starting with the major ones first.
