Hi all

Ive just put a deposit down on a 1997 300TDI:D

It has a little box saying electronic control unit on it situated under the middle seat. Why is this I thought they didnt have any electrics on them.

It has an alarm as well could it be something to do with this or what? I looked at an earlier 300 which didnt have this so whats the crack?

Please advise. Cheers
 
Yes I know what one is but I didnt realise 300tdi's have em. Is it because its a late model?

Do they cause any troubles?
 
as far as i am aware its only the later 300 series that have the fuel injection pump timing controlled by an ecu not the earlier 200 series.
 
It's when they start putting windows CE on em that you need to worry where it's hidden! You'll need to wipe viruses off the thing and delete all the porn that it automatically downloads :eek:
 
i found th same thing in my 1997 300tdi d90. it was slotted into the underside of the middle seat base. but wasnt conected to anything!there was a wire stickin out from under the floor panel under the middle seat, but the end was sealed off..
so i jus threw it all out.seat, frame and lil weird box'en all!its still running fingers crossed!!
 
Its the EGR valve electronic control unit. If the EGR valve has been removed then its redundant. I removed mine and noticed an instant improvement in engine perfomance due to it finally being able to breath properly. So if yours is still fitted you might want to think about removing it. Kits are avail but its easy to make your own blanking plate and then a new intercooler top hose without the branch is about £12.
 
I have an EGR on my 1997 300tdi 110.....My 1994 300tdi 90 doesnt have one and seems more responsive and feels more powerfull. Both seem to have similar MPG. The 110 (with the EGR) cruises better on motorways and is 'comfy' at 65-70 compared with 55 -60 for the 90.
I put this down to the 90 having standard tyres and the 110 having larger 265/75 R16s and being heavier. Am I right in thinking that??
I am reading all the historical threads and as mentioned above I am thinking about removing and blanking off the EGR. I am just weighing up if 110s are just not as nippy as 90's and if I could ever expect my 110 to be like the 90.

Has anyone replaced standard for bigger tyres and noticed the 90 or 110 is not as nippy??

Also.... the 2 leads from the EGR under the seat...I gather they are plugged into some sort of lap top/tester. Is this used just for just for emissions or can you see if the engine is tuned to its best??

I am reading previous posts and while this one covers parts of the question didn't see the point in starting a new one :)
