Electrolysis time!

Okay, so I've got a few rusty bits and pieces in my Series 3 to deal with, I don't think any are a huge problem, but a rusty gubbins looks awful and to my mind is less impressive for the MOT man as well.

I've read about electrolysis, anyone had any experience using this method of rust removal?

Take, for example, my air filter housing, it's covered in rust, not too thick but probably too much to sandpaper off, not to mention the little nooks and crannies. Could I use electrolysis instead?

Also, would it be best to undercoat/prime it straight after I've done so, and then paint it, to seal it? Or is this no good for such a part.

I'm a real newbie, sorry!

not heard of that electro thingy before but have usally cleaned things with a wire brush attachment on me drill, then hammerite it or red oxide it if left bare, it dont take long for rust to come back

I havent heard of it either,but would be great if it worked.I too use a wire brush,usually in a 4" grinder.Production paper can be good too.Wash off the dust and paint with 2 coats red oxide as soon as possible.Topcoat as well if youve got time!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have been thinking about using electrolysis to clean up some landy bits and have been looking for some graphite bars/rods/plates to avoid the scum produced using sacrificial steel/iron.... anybody know where I can buy such stuff (preferably cheaply)?

if i want to clean anything up i always use spar cheap coke 2 litres 1.20 in a bowl then thro in wat u want cleaned works wonders

you guys do know you can copper plate items using this method dont you by using table salt in the water instead of the washing soda and putting the negative on a copper pipe or plate and what you want coating on the live terminal

I remember that at school jc1 and thanks for posting the vid, not seen that before, seemed to do a nice job but a bit slow for me, think ill stay with the wire brushes etc.
