Electricals - Fuse Box Area!

Good evening everybody.

I've been rooting around my 1991 90 today, and have come up with a few questions/queries... I'm hoping you can help me with them!



1.



The ol' fuse box here.. Am I right in understanding the red relay here is for the wipers?

What is the black one with the adjuster on the top for? It turns very easily, but made sure not to move it too far from its original position. Potentially for the intermittent wiper setting?



2.



Upper-dash wiring.. Does these look like the right wires for a stereo install? I'm pretty sure it's had a stereo in before as there are speaker cables routed under the seats, and it came with the housing!



3.



Found these under the bonnet against the firewall.. Are the two loose ends important to anything? I'm pretty sure they would be better off connected to something, just not sure what!

The two smaller black plastic connectors too, any light to be shed on them?

The little brown wire was also almost worn through too, so I'll dab a blob of solder on that and heat-shrink/leccy tape over it when I get a minute.




I'm sure I'll have more threads going soon, but for now, this will do!

Black box is the indicator relay. I guess you have led indicators fitted. The adjustable bit is for adjusting so the trailer light doesnt flash when the indicators go on.

That plug of 4 can be used for the radio , the purple is perminant live and the green is switched live. Wire it up right , perminant to the clock element on the radio and the green to the radio....then it will go on and off correctly with the key.

You will need to find an earth . Just take a branch off that black going to your fag lighter.


The yellow and black are something to do with glow plugs on a 19j.... Is this a re engined truck ? I have the same wires in my old 19j and newer 200tdi loom that greyhair has labeled up turbo glow plugs. Either way they not needed on my 200tdi as it has glow plug timer circuit in and working.

Dont be trying to connect everything to something . There are a few disused connectors round the land rover as they used a 1 loom fits all method.

Excellent! Just what I wanted to hear.

Will I need anything like this - Land Rover Defender 89-06 ISO Adaptor Lead Wiring Car Radio Harness Connector | eBay ?? Or can I just wire straight in to the stereo's ISO block?

That's good to know! I've always wondered what some of my wires that go nowhere where for.

That thing wont help you fit the radio with what you have facing up currently.. I just chopped the wires coming out the back of the radio and wired them up to the right places. You only need ignition live , perminant live ( hell you dont even need that it just keeps the clock right) and earth. Then fit speakers wires.

The wiring adaptor is for connecting a radio with standard ISO plugs to the non-standard connector used by some factory-fit radios. If you've got a set of ISO plugs you can just connect them up to the relevant wires- red to purple, yellow to green, black to black.

Looks like it may have had a stereo fitted judging by the connector on the purple wire. Incidentally, these connectors don't make a very reliable connection, so IMO it's best to remove it and solder the joint properly.

Converting the existing loom to ISO makes it simple and then any radio will just plug in

Soldering I can do. I think I'll butcher a generic ISO plug block thing into the existing wiring - From memory, female will be what I need to hard wire in?
12-002 Universal Male ISO Radio Plug Adapter Car Stereo Wire Harness Connector - this one, for example?



I've also just been out to take some more photos.. I found ten un-used sets of connections, of one up to clusters of four.

Going back to the cluster of 4..



this is on the reverse side. Top_Drive, which green would you refer to as switched - Greeny green, or bluey green/turquoise? And what may the white be?

I really need to get myself a multi-meter.

That's a good idea before your landy goes in to melt down. I bought a cheap one for around £8 from ebay, works well and keeps me out off trouble.

get a multi metre and confirm but it "should" be the light green is a +12 switched feed.
