Hello,

I had a bit of a nasty moment the other day when my steering decided to lock up going round a sharp bend in the middle of a busy town...nearly ran a few people over!

Anyway I managed to struggle on and it looks like some muppet has put my steering wheel / column top parts back wrong so that the spring that should be on the back of the steering wheel has eaten into the bearing at the top of the steering column tube sending bits of swarf and crap into the bearing

I've ordered a new bearing and was just looking at the land rover manual. This looks like I need to remove the wheel, dash, indicator stalk, steering lock, column outer and probably end up rewiring the dash as every time I disturb anything behind there it seems to break!

Is there a simple way of popping the bearing out of the outer without taking the outer off the vehicle?

Also how do I get the indicator knock-off collar off the inner column? I had a quick look but couldn't work out what held it on...

I need to get cracking got MOT next week and I'm sure you need steering to work for that:(

Cheers

Dom

With the wheel off you should be able to prise the bearing out of the outer column with a screwdriver - doesn't matter if it gets a bit mangled. As long as nothing has worked its way past the bearing into the column you can just tap a new one in with a suitable piece of tube.

Smart, will have another look when the bits finally arrive - I forgot to ask for next day delivery so am having to drive the missus' car...the shame of it!

Any tips on the indicator knock-off collar thing, I'll need to remove that to get the bearing out...

If you read the book, it says the outer column will lift out past the indicator cancelling bit, leaving the inner column behind.

Thanks Oxides,

Had another look and not sure my parts are quite the same as in the book. looks like the indicator cancelling bit is attached to the steering wheel collar so should be realtively easy to get off...will see how I get on

Cheers

Well, apart from a lot of pulling pushing and bashing that was easy enough. I did have to do it by the book but it wasn't too bad.....unfortunately the ignition switch has now decided to pack in, no idea why. Must have been all that hammering!
