hi all i have had a clunking noise from the os fwheel area on my 02 td4 since i got it, i have had it to an independent that said it was the roll bar bushes so i changed them but it still clunks when i was getting the bushes from land rover i was asked if i wanted the drop links to anyone got any idea if this may be the problem how do you check them ???, the clunking noise is i think related to the suspension as i have had a good look around underneath for anything loose etc. , it clunks when i go over bumps etc regardless of weather you are breaking, turning have the power on and in all gears etc,any help or idea's from anyone would be appreciated apart from yellow disco that is !!

When I drive over bumps at a certain speed I have a kind of clunk as well, I first thought the battery was slightly loose and jumped in it's fittings but apparently not, I think it is something to do with the steering, maybe the steering wheel demper or so, don't know and don't think about it anymore, just when I hear it again I'm glad it's still there and didn't fall off underway.;) :D :D

ye sounds familiar i even looked at the expansion tank as that was loose as my clunk is on the drivers side to no avail

Mine is on the driver's side as well (the clunk I mean) but my expansion tank is on the other side (I'm on the continent, LHD;) ), I even thought a while it was the copper piece underneath the airbag in the steeringwheel making that noise, took the airbag off and also that copper piece and files a corner off it (I saw that somewhere) but it still is there, now it doesn't bother that much anymore as the place near my home where it happened each and every time I passed, had the road fixed so no bump anymore which results in no clunck anymore (there). :D :D :D

There is a TSB for this problem (tec570603 dec `03)steering rack rattle it`s basically to much pressure on the power steering return hose and the replacement hose fixes the problem ,the parts are (RHD QEH000062 LHD QEH000072) there is no vibration mass damper on 2001 onward modals in the steering wheel (under the airbag)i had mine done and the new hose as transformed the landy, the new hose looks flat and allows it to expand when under pressure,if you go to goggle and type in service slants and find land rover it explains more there, any questions please ask ,this problem as be the bain of my life since i`ve own the freelander and now its fixed its drives great !:)

Hi smythe,

Mine is a MY01 (delivered january 9th 2001) and I have such a copper mass demper under the airbag. Just tried to find the stuff on google but couldn't find it. What else does it do, besides the possible clunk on a roadbump, to the steering/driving of the car pse ??

is that you will ?

hows the belgian guy without the freelander and the new bike(ducati)http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3828/is_200510/ai_n15740765 try this and under land rover it basiclly say what the TSB says.

The power steering return hose as to much pressure in it causeing a hydraulic rattle(not metallic)although they can sound the same.

hope this helps let me know how you get on

this fix as tranformed my freelander

Hi,

Yes, it's me. And re Ray (the_belgian_guy) nothing seen nor heard from him for the last couple of weeks. Guess he's too busy with his work these days, not riding his bike as the weather is too bl... awful.:)
Take care.

interesting i think i may go have a word with landrover see what they have to say i no they will not fix a tsb problem for free but they may diagnose it and if it is safe to clunk away then that will do for me

only available from dealer so give them a call, expect it to be around £60 plus 1/2 hour to do the job,you could try and mention the TSB at the dealer and see how they price it ?

got to the bottom of it, could not find anything wrong but i could hear a metallic sound when i kicked the drivers side wheel traced it to the drop link i bound it up with tape and whent for a spin noise stopped, replaced the drop links £15 each 30 min job now sorted, now there is no clanking coming from the drop links i could hear the power steering return hose so i slid a pice of water pipe laging over it made a hell of a difrence

Ps Ello Will! Did you have a good weekend? Yer absence on heres bin noticed Cho--cio--- See Yer.

Hi mondo,

Yes, but trying to keep awake all the time in order not to miss the postman, he's supposed to bring the Ron piece in one of these days. On the other hand I heard on another forum (from a Belgian guy mind you) who said he disconnected his MAF completely and he said he had no problems at all. Find it hard to believe though. He also said a 'mechanic' told him it didn't harm if disconnected entirely ? (Guess the guy never drove a Td4 with a correctly working MAF:D ) Maybe this is OFF TOPIC for this thread but as you asked in this thread how the weekend was......
(Too lazy to find the other one and fill it out in there).:p
