Drivers side door locks

My dads three door Disco has developed a problem in the driver door lock/opening handle. Its locked shut and the catch wont work.
I have managed to get the door card off after a bit of a struggle (there's not much room between the seat and the door)I have removed the CL motor to give a bit of space to work in all the rods were intact and connected to the lock but just don't seem to have any feel when you operate the door catch.
I removed the door handle from the outside skin and tried operating the rod useing a pair of grips but to no avail.
Its as if the locking mechanism is not disconnecting
So the questions are How do you get the door to open from inside ,is there some way of unlocking the catch from inside the door skin
do you have to remove the window runners to get at the back of the lock.
Any help will be gratefully recieved as the Disco is sitting on my drive with bits of door covering the passenger seat.

Hi Ratty, its not so much that the handle wont work I disconnected the handle from the actuating rod and tried pulling the rod with grips the rod moves through its arc but has no resistance.
It feels like when you try to open the door without first unlocking it.
The lock I assume is kaput what I need to know is there a trick to somehow open the lock from the inside so I can get the door open.
My dads a bit to old to be climbing over the passenger seat and the gear stick to get in
