I have a 1984 90 n.a diesel. I changed the prop shaft as the u j was badly worn however now it will not drive unless the diffs are locked in either high or low ratio. When in normal mode i let the clutch and there is just no drive and a grinding noise coming from the front diffs. When in nomral mode the prop shaft can be turned by hand because there is normal drive. It will drive when locked but when the clutch is released there is a clunk which is also apparent when accelerating or slowing down.
Can anyone advise on what the problen can be?? As it worked fine before prop shaft was replaced, Or was it just a coincident??
 
how many "front diffs" do you have? I suggest one of them might have gone to the land of gazzubered diffs. :( or half shaft or CV joint or......
 
Thanks for that, just one diff - slipped finger! How do I check what is ok and what may be broken, any tips anyone?
 
Is your diff lock light coming on and off as you engage, disengage. I wonder if your t-box is actually letting you engage normal drive properly? If not it does sound like something is gone up front. I think that clunk is normal in diff lock - it's a rougher gearing selection - mine does the same. it's not really meant for driving long distance. Just clutch her easy.
 
are you SURE the lever is engaging the normal Hi/Lo positions?

Sounds like its not making the connection. I would be surprised if you have broken anything just taking the prop off! especially if it drove fine in normal Hi/Lo before the prop was removed.

thanks for reply, yes the lever is engaging in normal high/low position, prop shaft turns in normal high/low but axle does not turn. took it too a mechanic the other day he does not know what the problem is either.
 
Its not your drive member is it. I had somthing similar where she would only go with diff lock. Without it, front prop turned and wheels didnt. I thought it was diff goe but turned out to be just one drive member
