Drag link ball joint

Should/can the ball joint have any up and down movement? Zero play side-to-side, but a few mm play up and down with a large pry bar. Is this just the spring in the joint (presuming it has one?), or should there be zero play? Nearside if it makes a difference.

The side to side is definitely the important factor. My gut reaction would be there should be no up and down movement but I would also guess there is a spring in the joint (there certainly is for the drop arm ball joint) and if using a bar I would suggest it is just flexing against the spring.

It would fail an M O T. [ if noticed ] No spring in normal ball joint.
