My wife has just come back in our Discovery 2 and told me that the driver's side window is broken. Apparently she was closing the window using the button on the console when she heard "a click" and broke the mechanism. The window won't rise and just slips down.
Can someone please tell me what might be the likely cause of this failure?
Thanks

If you haven't already!! Check the fuses!!
If ok! You will needed to take the door cover if and check the regulator!!

If broken? You can fix it in place until you get a replacement window regulator!

If the window isn't jammed in just one position it means the regulator and or motor have come adrift.
You will need to take the door card off and separate the regulator from the motor.
This is a bit fiddly but not impossible!
Basically the mechanism is connected to the glass by two bolts, it is further connected to the door by 4 bolts (I think) then the motor is connected to the regulator by I think 3 bolts.
In my case the bolts holding the motor onto the regulator had come a bit loose, the regulator where it crosses over in like a scissor mechanism had become stiff and needed loosening and lubricating, and the motor itself was full of water.
Once all the obvious things had been done to it, it was fine. You'll need some clamps to hold the glass up out of the way, in the slides.
The worse thing of the lot is getting the clips lined up and back in when you put the door card back on. Hardest part of the whole thing by far!
Good luck!

Thank you both,
It is not the fuse. In fact, I've taken the regulator out and the motor is working fine too. Good news.
But, Stanleystreamer, I know exactly what you mean. As I pulled the mechanism out from the hole in the door, I thought "I'm going to have a job getting this back in", because it is unscrewed blind.
Would you both have a look at the attached images and tell me if anything looks broken? All the pivots are greased and moving, and I can't see anything amiss. The half cog wheel didn't come out with the rest of the mechanism and where I've circled in orange it looks to me like some weld has broken. Is this correct and should this cog be connected to the main mechanism?
When I unscrewed the regulator from the door, the bolts were indeed very loose. If the mechanism looks unbroken, maybe they were just loose and something has disconnected?

I've had to rivet the rear door at the bottom, as some of the seal had rusted away! Did not notice it until I turned the radio up and got a horrible 'Tinny Noise' from the rear speakers:confused:

Are your teeth okay because they look worn from the pictures.

The bit you have circled should indeed be connected to the main mechanism. The welds have given up the ghost.
New one or weld em back up again but you would need to ensure everything stays very straight. Plug weld would be the obvious way to go.
But for the cost I'd get a new one.
