Been down to boxgrove pit today in my td5 disco was great fun till i decided to go through a deep puddle water cam over the bonnet engine cut out. water came in the footwells just under the seat!

anyway winched it out dried out the air filter! started first time and moves forward and back butr as soon as the revs go over 1700rpm it just cuts out. and then you have to wait about 1min and it will start again. and then cuts back out at 1700rpm etc.

anyone experianced this or got any thoughts on what it could be?

Sounds like it could possibly be due to a wet throttle potentiometer. I'm assuming that when it's working the engine is running smoothly with no smoke?
 
yes the engine runs fine not lumpy or any smoke, just as soon as you put a bit to much pressure on the throttle it cuts out?

do you know of anyone else with a td5 that you can swap the potentiometer over with to test it? There are 2 types of potentiomter. A 2 track and a 3 track. If the incorrect one is fitted the vehicle will need plugging into a diagnostic to change the settings. I carry a spare pot in my landy just in case water manages to get into it when wading.

hello mate cheers for the help! to completely honest with you i dont really know what that is? and i dont have anyone with a td5 tht could swap? have you got a link to a potentiometer? so i can see what it is? also how much are they to buy?

It's the accelerator pedal.

Have a look at the top of the pedal for the box with the wires going into it. If the box is full of water it will prevent the throttle from working. The pedal/potentiometer are an all in one unit.;)
 
Surely for the throttle position sensor to get wet you'd have to have water inside the car to the top of your socks?. Was there about a foot of water in the footwell?

Just under the seat he said, not up to the seat. I read it as it was coming in just under the seat and not up to the seat. That's why I questioned it.
 
to be honest Dids, after i posted i re-read and wondered if he meant 'it was coming in just under the seats' or if 'it was coming in, just under the seats'

being a regular 'just under the seater' i meediatly assumed he meant it was deep in there.

For sure. If he gets away with just the throttle sensor on the fritz after that amount of water in there he's a lucky boy. I'd have been sick in my mouth the second the carpet got slightly damp.
 
Is it an Auto or Manual ?

If auto check the Auto box ECU has not been drowned (under passenger seat)

Also remove the engine ECU and check the plugs / sockets are not wet.

Yes its an auto and the ecu was dry but never knew about the under seat ecu? That most probaly did get wet
 
my local mechanic has just looked at it, and said its throwing up a fault code on injector no.5. before i went to boxgrove i had a diesel leak coming from the fuel regulator, what hes saying is it might of let water in the same way it lets diesel out, and injector no.5 is just behind the fuel regulator? what you reckon?
 
I had my TD5 die after deep some ambitious deep water wading. I put the main engine ECU on the radiator for a couple of days and all was back to normal..!
