Hi people.

I've seen places selling facelift kits, where they upgrade the headlights on the 300 TDI to ones like on the early TD5.

I enquired bout the possibility of fitting the later TD5 headlights (the pocket type like on the 2004 Discovery) and the place (Simmonites) said they could fit the earlier ones but not the later TD5 headlights as it was not possible.

How come when the later TD5 lights fit on an early TD5? Surely it's not that hard to fit them to a 300 Tdi?

Anyone know how to do it or had it done please?

Right, to fit the early D2 headlights the ones with the black suround to the 300 series D1 is a straight replacement.

To fit the D2 facelift HID lights to the early D2 is not a straight replacement and requires some bodywork modifications, so therefore bodywork mods are required to a D1 if the HID lamps were to be fitted although this would be illegal as the D1 doesn't have self-leveling suspension a requirement for vehicles fitted with HID.

I didn't realise that it's a requirement to have SLS for HID lights on a car. My uncle's Mazda 6 don't have it.
But that would explain why Simmonites wouldn't agree to fit the later D2 lights to my 300 tdi.

What sort of things would I have to do then to fit them? Cut out the metal behind the headlight clusters for more room for them or is there more than this to do?

theres a guide online somewhere when someone did it, i cant remember where though
Thanks I been trying to find out how it's done for ages.
Spent loads on my disco including custom black & red leather interior and all sorts but I hate the standard headlights on it! :(

I know it can be done tho as I seen one on eBay:

Hi CYANIDE-2600, I think your uncle's Mazda must have self-leveling headlights which is the term used in the vehicle regs but with Land Rover, SLS seems to comply..

You are quite right cutting out the metal around the existing light receses, also I think you will find that Simmonites light units are fitted with or accept halogen bulbs so ok to fit D1s.

Have a search on the LRO disco forum as an owner has fitted 'Simmonites' (although he got them off ebay) to his early TD5 he did a brilliant job and shows how to do-it with colour pics.

Thanks very much for the helpful info Discool. Will check it out and see if I can get it done :D

The other thing that you must remember is the Front wings on a 300Tdi are different than a TD5 and will need to be altered to make the lights fit.

The indicator on a TD5 are larger and the edge of the wings are squarer unlike the 300Tdi which curve down more.

Cyanide let me know how u get on m8, got my lights a couple of months ago, looked at simonites but bloody expensive looking for a local bodyshop prob to do mine, bigger job than I thought:doh: Im local to you so if you find any1 let us know m8y.

Hi i have just fitted the pocket lights to my 200 and it is not that bad a job but you do have to do some cutting . It takes about 7 hours to do the job but to wire up main and dip took some working out so the all work properly but i think it is worth it.

ive thought about doing this to my 300tdi to the early td5 ones, didnt know that the lights where straight replacement, would they still they still work on the electric head light adjuster??
