ok i have had look round but can only find bit of information so can any one help. when you turn the key, the lights on the dash come on and the radio. but when you try and start the engine all you get is a click which i think is from the solinoid. it has happened before and i just cleaned the connectors on the battery and it worked straight away but no luck this time.

any one help

Get under vehicle and look at starter motor, there is a single wire connected. Take this off, clean and reconnect.

Normally works for me.

As above, it's likely the starter solenoid, in which case you need to repair it. Not at all uncommon with TD5 starters. Or you could just go down the route of replacing the starter motor. More expensive but simpler.

However, reading your symptoms again, I would just add that it could be a flat battery, unless you've already discounted that?

I just did a starter the other day. Just clicked, would usually start on 4th or 5th click though.

£9.99 repair kit vs £200 starter? You decide!

1x 15mm nut at the top, usually very tight, 2x 13mm nuts underneath, tight but more accessible.

You need a 15mm shallow socket (3/8" drive) and either a wobble end 4" extension or a UJ and a 2" extension, and a low profile ratchet.

This setup will allow you to sneak the nut from underneath. It's VERY awkward and you cannot see the top nut so it's all by feel.

Once the starter is off its a piece o ****!

+1.

100% will be the solenoid contacts.

Del.

Takled the top nut by removing inlet manifold, better than spending hours under the car, spent a few hours above it ! Chucked the top nut in the bin, everything seems fine so far !
