Hello all I have just got hold of a box from a 2000 disco 2 with a diff lock mine is a 2004 without a difflock. I'm pondering do I swap the complete transfer box or do I swap the diff lock assembly onto mine ? It's pretty dirty so if do replace whole transfer box I will replace the seal , give it a clean and give the handbrake a check over . Never removed a LR transfer case before . Do I have remove the centre console ?

Any thoughts ?

has your 2004 got the diff lock spigot on the front of the box if not swap the t/boxes

No it has not , looked at the workshop manual for the box and my thinking was right you can remove the front case for diff lock as one unit , easy enough.

Need to order a tool for prop bolts as i can not find mine . I know one thing a transfer box is bloody heavy and imagine the weight with the gearbox attached !

you can swap the front but it means stripping it down swapping front diff taper bearing and rechecking the preload on the center diff bearings ,not as straight forward as youd presume, swapping the whole lump would be easier

I just had a email forwarded onto me from a chap at Ashcroft transmissions said it's not necessary/ vital. Unless you strip the whole unit down then yes to reshim . They do it when rebuilding as going through the whole box .

I can see why because your using a bearing outer race from another bearing .

Sorry apologies I read the info from Ashcroft wrong . I need to remove the bearing race and shim from my one on the disco now and fit in the one with cdl . Therefore the bearing on the end of the shaft will be matched to its original race .

Looking at the Ashcroft cdl update kit its exactly what they supply without a bearing race or shim fitted .

From what I read mine being a 04 I will have nothing to modify on the wiring also have a loom with a multi plug that came with the used box . May be of use .

Cheers , matt

yes youd need to keep bearing and race together,
the problem with that is you dont know if it is the right shim then, as the reason the use selectable shims is each box and housing varies, if you fit another housing you need to check the preload then, to ensure it is the right shim
