Discovery 2 front coil spring

Having failed the MOT for a broken front spring (drivers side) I am changing both the springs and shock absorbers. When removing the broken spring, after releasing the rear bolt of the shock absorber the spring moved blocking access to the front bolt. I got over this by cutting the spring with no problems. Now with the new spring in place it won't sit flat on the mounting plate. If the plate sits correctly on the axle then the front of the spring is raised by about 1/2 inch. The photo below shows how far the plate is out when fitted to the spring. Any help / ideas much appreciated.
