morning all , i have a problem with my series 2 discovery gearbox ( automatic and diesel ) . it is taking its time changing up and it seems to slip when you ease off the accelerator then apply gas again ( when say approaching a roundabout ) she is in amazing condition and passed her mot 2 wks ago with ease and i am hoping the problem isnt a new gearbox as prices i have quoted are beyond my pocket at the moment ! . any advice would be appreciated

check the level and condition of the tranny fluid..

There is a bolt on the front corner of the sump, 8mm allen i believe.

undo that quite gingerly as fluid will shoot out, catch some with a glass or sumpfink and check the colour, make sure some comes out?!

prolly worth changing the fluid aswell while you're at it..

1 Make sure you can undo the 8mm allen on the front corner of the sump, this is the level plug, if you cannot remove this plug don't go on!

2 Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the sump, its an Hex head too.

3 Once the old fluid has finished draining undo the sump retaining bolts, there are several around the sump ;)

4 Be careful dropping the sump as it will have excess fluid in the bottom, 'tis also worth checking the sump and magnets for debris, if it's burning clutches "slipping" the fluid will be black, the sump will also be coated with sludge.

4.5 Clean the gasket surfaces - make sure its free of dirt and debris.

5 Remove the transmission filter, i believe this is held by a Torx fastener

6) Refit the New Transmission filter and O-Ring - Torque the Torx bolts to 8nm

7 Clean the sump throughly,

8 replace the rubber seal around the lip of the sump, apply a thin coat of ATF to the seal to aid fitment and seal.

9 replace the sump and torque the bolts down evenly - to 10nm

10 refit the drain plug

11 At this point add fluid to the gearbox through the level plug on the corner of the sump, 'til it flows out..

12 Once it flows out Start the engine and with your foot firmly on the brake, cycle it through the gears pausing for 3 seconds in each gear..

13 Wait for about 10 mins and then recheck the level.

14 Add fluid again with engine running and HOT! be careful around the exhaust.

15 Once fluid flows out repeat the above, Pausing for 3 seconds in each gear again.. ;)

16 finally re-check the level for the last time, making sure to top up if necessary, a thin stream should flow out the level hole,

17 once it does put the plug in and then turn the engine off.

18 don't turn the motor off then put the plug in as the pump will stop and oil will pish out the filler hole ;)

19 Go for a drive ;)

Hi, I'm about to change the fluid and filter, I can see nothing in the service records that the filter has ever been changed and the fluid not for probably 60k. I was worried by the comment about not being able to remove the fill plug.

Does this often happen? Is it 8mm Allen socket? What if it is stuck, any advice on how to remove it?

Many thanks.

Cheers.
