I have a series 1 Disco with LT77 gearbox (I think!) which suddenly whilst going downhill started making a clattering clunking sound and the speedo failed (not sure if this is linked). Can still select all gears and seems to be fine going uphill, but downhill makes this disturbing noise. Any ideas? Please.

sounds like the speedo drive has self destructed and if falling against summin else while vehicle is in a nose down attitude. if everything else if fine then it more than likely just the speedo that has disinteragated. you would really need to strip it down to find out exactly what has bin damaged.

of course someone with more knowledge of the lt77 box might come along and say "its the doo hicky washer that needs pushing back 15thou"

Thanks for the info, that's what I hoped it might be. Do you know if speedo drive is nylon/plastic or metal? if nylon I will worry about it when I get back home and just take the bits out! Forgot to say we just got in our Landy last week and drove to Bulgaria.

Thanks guys. I am more used to a Series! If I had driven a Series over here I would just keep going till I needed my hammer!

Transfer box has finally given up at a place called Plovdiv. Self-destruct button must have accidently got pressed! Luckily a very helpful Bulgarian friend has rescued us and now safely staying with friends whilst waiting for new box from UK (WARNING to any other travellers idiotic enough to come further than Germany - The RAC said it would cost us 3-4000 Euros for new transfer box arranged myself through Paddocks for about £500) Now have to sit back on the beach and drink some more beer and rakia whilst I wait for it to arrive, live is just so hard at times!!!!!
