Hi everyone, Ive got a 1994 300tdi disco with egr. Just bought the car and found it to be great bar a few little niggles. Firstly the cylinder head, radiator, water pump has been replace due to the vehicle had overheated in the past plus all filters and oils. I imagine the cambelt would have been replaced also. The injectors have been reconditioned also.
Now the problems im experiencing are lack of power untill revs are over 3000rpm then the turbo comes in almost feels like it is hesitating then it goes, I also have black smoke when flooring it.
Secondly I have found the engine to be slightly noisier then my last 300tdi it sound like a blowing manifold gasket or noisy tappets when revs are picked up.
Finially when started from cold it idles at around 750-950rpm once warms it idles at 1050rpm.

Any help would be most appreciated.
Henry

do the simple things first check or replace turbo hoses , the intercooler may need a clean , you can only assume the cambelts been done unless its written down some where in the history

i also noticed that the older 300 tdi engines are noisyer its worth checking the valve clearences although if the head been off and skimmed they should of been done

Because you are getting black smoke and rough running check your lift pump and fuel filter also the sediment filter, sounds like lack of fuel

Hi guys, I had abit of fun on saturday in the old girl i pumped the lift pump and thought thats not doing alot. After that i went out in it. When started from any temperature she would smoke abit (unburnt fuel) then it would clear after a couple of revs. When driving a full operating temp she would hesitate and plumes of thick black smoke out the exhaust (2500rpm onwards) but as soon as it would hit 3000rpm she was absolutly fine.
So i tharshed it to the governer in every gear and she ran on, rev gauge went past 6000rpm managed to slow it down and then it was fine never done it since lol.
Valve clearances are good. Sediment filter is new and fuel filter. Lift pump is shagged. Removed the intercooler is saturated in oil drained around quarter of a cup full.
All intercooler pipes are wet and inlet manifold. EGR is seized. Inlet manifold has been leaking oil through the gasket lol.
Checked the turbo has seems to feel ok bit of up/down movement but thats normal isnt it?
So tomorrow i will be cleaning all pipework, intercooler and inlet manifold out. Ordering a new lift pump and will go from there.

So as you can see ive had some fun and scares but im sure i will get there eventualy.

Any advice guys will be appreciated.

Turbo boosts correctly though no blue/white smoke etc. I no I have oil in the intake system but the car is 14years old and its a diesel and they all get oil in them. Im not saying its not fooked but you never no. Im just doing all the basics first and the cheap items. Got to check the timing yet and make sure the pump hasnt been messed with.

Revving to 6000rpm sounds like it's starting to run on it's own oil, usually sucked through the turbo oil feed/worn seals and blown into the cylinders. You are aware that diesels can use oil as a fuel, aren't you?

Yes i am. But what im saying its not smoking from turbo failure etc. Ive had plenty off turbo fail over the years and this one feels fine. It hasnt used any oil either wich odd. And ive thrashed it again hard and its been fine?? Cars there good fun, hay.

All sorted now. Came down to the lift pump leaking diesel into the engine oil. Runs like a new car now.

Cheers peeps

Henry

Yeah it did. I had to thoughly clean out all the inter cooler, pipes and inlet manifold aswell but it's all good now.

lift pumps are gash arent they , is there an upgraded one somwhere cos i have no end of trouble with these at work. 9/10 times its lift pump causing fuel and smoke trouble lol

glad ya had it squared . ya gotta love how one simple thing causes so many faults. i bet shes a clean engine now though ey

Yeah its brilliant now goes like a bloody rocket. Ive put a delphi one on it as the old one looked like the cheap **** of ebay. Nice clean disco now with a good heart.
