I know there's a sticky on Disco tyres, but it only applied to Mk 1 Discos. I am looking at a set of nutter mud/snow tyres for the winter for my stock unmodified 2003 Disco 2. I want to know what tyres will fit on my Disco for certain.

Now I've got 255/55R18s on a the moment, so by my reckoning the wheel size is as follows:

Wheel = 18 x 25.4 = 457mm

Tyre height (top+bottom) = 2 x 255 x 0.55 = 281mm

Total wheel dimensions = 457 + 281 = 738mm diameter, 255mm wide.

So it's logical to say if I get any tyre inside 740mm of this width, I should be absolutely fine??

E.g. Insaturbo 235/70 R16 = 736mm x 255mm.

Does that make sense, and does anyone know how much bigger/wider you could go without any rubbing or bumping???

Cheers
Jock

I run 236/70/16 BFG M/T's and they fit great

here is a short guide for D2"

"255/65-16: Stock tire size.

255/70-16: Just a bit taller than stock.

265/75-16: Taller and wider than stock, possible to fit without lift. minor rubbing. Looks real balanced with mild OME lift.

285/75-16: even taller than 265/75-16, r requires a bit more lift than the regular OME lift. some have fitted OME751 from Discovery series I, and changed SLS sensor in the rear to achieve almost 3 inches. Gearing and shaft strenght become issues.

255/85-16: a bit taller than 285/75-15 but narrower. Gearing and shaft strenght become issues."

And never use 18" wheels again cos they make the car unstable.

Thanks for the tips sierrafery. The 18" were fitted when I bought her, but they were a standard LR option at the time. I've never had any issues (and I like my cornering) what makes you comment on the instability?

Think I might brave the 255/75 profile as there is decent clearance on the current setup and they would only be 1" bigger in radius.

Cheers!

I saw many cases of disco missbehaviour on 18" tyres that's why i wanted to warn u.... maybe when u'll see the difference on 16" wheels u'll realise too.;)

Bigjock- If you are running 255/55 R18 and want to change to 16's for the winter fit 255/65 R16, they are the same outside diameter as the 18's you are running so won't affect what your speedo reads.
I ran 255/65R16 Grabber AT2's last winter and never had a problem, but you can't get them anymore and I had to change 2 of them, I've fitted the new Grabber AT which looks good but I haven't had them off road yet so I'll have to wait and see.

Thanks minidod, so my decision is 255/65s or to brave the 70 profile which is just a bit taller and might giver me a rubbing problem. The speedo might under-read but that'll help me avoid another 3 points! But ther bigger sidewall looks better and is better for the off-roading.

Maybe I'll see what the best deal is and then decide. I am thinking about the Saharas instead of the Special Track as the more rounded profile would probably be better in snow (??) but I've had special tracks and they were the nuts so again, I'll see what the deals are.

I run BFG 255/70/16,s and there is no rubbing issues WHATSOEVER. They fill the arches a bit more and make the speedo read SPOT ON .

We have a D2 at work with 275/40/20. It drives very well tbh but obviously harder ride than stock.

16" for MUDs, 17" for ATS, 18" for roadies, 20" if you're feeling pimp.

They're not much different, just get used to the tram lining! :D
