Hi all
posted in the introduce yourself section.
Only ever had toyota jeeps so for but i want to try a discovery ,Do i go for a disco2 or splash out for a disco3?
Reply so far tell me disco 2 can be worked on at home which is the way i normally go.Is the disco 3 a truck that can be serviced and maintained at home?
Looking for pros and cons to owning both as in what they are like to live every day for driving and comfort and ease of maintaining and costs of maintence.
Am i better to go for a disco 3 over a disco 2 etc
Any info welcome

Disco 2's are getting on in years, but for maintainability they are far better than the D3's which have only recently started to get the spares availability they should have had from day one.

If you want a cruiser, buy a D3, if you want a workhorse that won't need suspensions bushes, EGR, handbrake etc etc sorting out regularly, buy a D2, preferably a V8.

Disco 2 are a great vehicle if you can find a good one without too much rust.
I too think the V8 is much better than diesel, and come at much lower prices, and usually lower mileages. Autobox likewise.
Not heard very much good about D3s at all.

It depends on what you want to use the vehicle for? The D3 is miles ahead of the D2 in every way including costs of ownership. The D3 is better in every way and for the most part is equally home maintainable. It is an extremely heavy vehicle, actually it's LRs heaviest standard production vehicle made at around 2.7 Ton.
This weight does mean that suspension and brakes take a pounding. Both however are not difficult to sort by a competent DIY mechanic. For D3 ownership, you will need a dedicated diagnostic device. I'd use the Gap Diagnostic IID in the Bluetooth version as this does more than the dealers equipment and is the size of a fag packet so can be left in the gloves box.
With the D3, be aware that you will always be doing something to it. It's a complex vehicle that will tie up lots of time and a good lump of cash too. I've owned a D3 and loved it. However my circumstances ment that I couldn't tie up lots of time and money in a vehicle so I've gone back to a Freelander 1.

I have driven D1 V8s but I think the TD5 is great to drive, feels gruntier than the V8, but that could be tired V8 vs late TD5 auto with the final year map
