following on from my thread in the discovery section http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/not-f-g-happy-280149.html i've been using halfords power steering and ATF fluid in my PAS system as it says "suitable for systems requiring Dexron II or Dexron III" (or words to that effect). as far as i can gather, (having searched) thats fine for a disco 2 PAS system, however, the landy specialist that i just paid £2000 for a lot of work which i'm not entirely satisfied with, reckons its wrong and can damage the system. i had no reason to doubt him earlier today on the phone, as i hadn't picked up my disco and the main problems hadn't come to light at that point.

can anyone clear this up 100% as i'm rapidly doubting this "specialist"s credibility

its bollocks.
Halfrauds dont make oils and fluids - they re-brand stuff.

If it meets the relevant specifications it is absolutely fine to use.

hi MHM, he asked me what i used and i said- "just halfords PS fluid"- he said "what, ATF?" i said "yes, it was the recommended stuff" he then told me that it was the wrong fluid (i didnt catch what he said it should be) and ATF will attack the seals and im lucky not to have damaged my steering box etc and to keep an eye on it now in case any other parts of the system start leaking!
i'm more concerned with the still leaking cooling system and the supposedly "residual oil" still coming up into the header tank after "3 flushes today"

Halfrauds do several power steering fluids. which meet different specs. did you use the correct one?

sounds like a bit of a cowboy to me

i used the one which said suitable for Dexron II or Dexron III which i thought was ok after some searching. i get the impression the PAS system is fairly forgiving even if the wrong oil is put in. one thread even said an accidental engine oil fill wouldnt kill it (dont worry, i didnt put engine oil in)
