Disco 2 not starting. HELP

Disco 2 2003 V8.

After being driven about an hour ago. Now it won't start.

Key goes in and the dash lights up normally. Turn to final position and everything goes out. Have to turn all the way back to get anything.

Checked battery voltage and it's a happy 12.7vts.

Checked all fuses. Nothing out of place.

Any ideas? I'm a little far from the nearest landrover mechanic.
 
I had a starting issue again today!!

I had previously changed the solenoid in the starter.

So under I went hit it and checked the switch wire and it's fine since lol
 
Try checking the battery voltage and watch the meter as you turn the key to start. If the battery is shagged, it could read OK off load and drop to next to nothing on load.

+1^^^... make sure that the battery clamps are well tightened ...or if the starter is seized it will put very high load on the battery
 
Check the battery terminals are tight and clean, its worth taking them off and cleaning them as a matter of course. The same thing happened to me at the petrol station I just needed to tighten up the terminal.
 
clamps are tight and clean. I'm getting 12.6vts off the battery leads not just the battery.

Once I turn the key, everything flicks off, until i go back to position 1 on the ignition, there is no crank or clicking.

Crawling under the car to try and hit the starter motor now!
 
I had this problem on Tuesday night after driving 70 odd miles. Stopped for half an hour and then dash lights only nothing else. Difference being mine is a manual gearbox. Did manage to start it with a bum start though and then its been fine since. Have ordered a starter overhaul kit and that's my job for today.
 
you didnt do what's most important though... or you didnt mention it, what's the voltage on the battery while you turn ignition to crank???... this is the question
 
Volts dipped when 'cranking' although no cranking is happening. Going to get the wife to help bump the car while in gear to try and free a stuck start motor if that's the issue. That works on autos right?
 
try touching some long nose pliers across the main terminals on the starter solenoid to see if it spins do it with the ignition on it should start up. If it does check its getting a signal from the key on start position.
 
SOLVED.

The connection between the starter and the live was not giving enough charge.

Hard to get to it, but with the volts meter I went along the cable and touched the wire ends and then the terminal noticing the drop.

Happy ending.
 
If it's full of craps just check the connection for the crank sensor as if it's dirty it's probablem waiting to happen you may as well clean it now :)
