Disco 2 Gearbox Oil choice

Hi

I've got a Disco 2 TD5 that grates its gears in 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gearchanges when the gearbox oil is hot.

I've changed the oil in the gearbox and it still does it.

Can I put a thicker gearbox oil to make the gear change slightly better when the gearbox oil is hot?

no... and if you have other than mtf94 or dexronII /IID in it that might be the cause... R380 is VERY squeamish with oils

My Disco 2 (Manual) also has slightly poor synchro and needs deliberate gear changing to avoid crunching, it's on 145,000 is this just normal or might an oil change help? Is it fairly easy to drain /refill the box?

Easy enough to change the oil and from experience its a common issue on the Disco gearbox. Its a slow box at the best of times and is easy to buzz the syncro if you change at anything other than a slow deliberate change.
