The alarm on my Freelander 1 has been going off during the night- I can't hear it from my bedroom but I'm sure it must be annoying the neighbours.
I want to make sure it doesn't happen again, and I very much doubt anyone will try to steal it (it's a 2006 model) so what is the best (and easiest) way to disable the alarm without disconnecting the horn?

Do a code read.. Find out if it is the internal sensor setting it off. If it is use the key to lock it rather than the fob then tha passive internal is not activated.
Worth trying it anyway and see if it solves the problem.

I've been trying to do that, but it's got the 2-stage locking (press the fob once to open the driver's door then again to open the rest) so I've been having to lock with the fob, then unlock and lock the driver's door.
I actually managed to set the alarm off while doing it today.

Single point unlock makes no difference to locking.
Locking with the key locks the doors, but doesn't put the internal sensor on. ;)

Then it must have a fault with the central locking, because locking the driver's door with the key doesn't lock the others.
But I'm not interested in fixing the alarm, I just want to disable it.

Turn the key to the locking position twice.

You can't, not without LR software, to put the vehicle into another market mode like Japan, where the alarm wasn't used.
Unfortunately in the UK to comply with the insurance requirements, the alarm can't be totally disabled, only the internal sensor turned off by locking with a key.
You could also unplug the internal sensor plug, which would also stop the sensor from working.
You best bet is to have a diagnostic read done, then you'll know what the actual problem is.

So disconnecting a battery terminal will guarantee my neighbours get an undisturbed night?
It would be less hassle for you to park it a block or 2 over.

Your neighbours will get a good nights sleep and going to pick it up will be less hassle than reconnecting the battery, sorting out the security code for the radio, recalibrating the rear window and any other stuff every day.

You could disconnect the battery, but then you'll have to calibrate the rear window every day, and re-enter the radio code.
Wouldn't it be easier in the long run to simply have the system checked to identify the fault? They're normally very reliable, so once the issue is known and fixed, that should be the end of the issue. ;)

Thanks for all the replies. I did disconnect the battery just to make sure it stays quiet for the immediate term. It's on my drive, so parking it round the block would be a bit obvious. I don't use the car every day, more like 2 or 3 times a week.
Next step will be to try locking it with the key to see if it is the interior sensor, which I strongly suspect it is.

Dont forget the bonnet switch

We're movement sensors fitted to all FL1's ? As I haven't got any In my 04 HSE I can leave the dog in there & the alarm doesn't go off unlike my 01 D2 which has two sensors on the roof lining & the hound soon sets it off unless I lock the door with the key.

They're part of the Thatcham 1 security approval specification, so all Freelanders have movement detection as standard.
They can be turned off with LR diagnostic equipment though. ;)
