Hello all. I'm a complete newbie here, so apologies up front for what might seem to be daft questions...

I took delivery of my first Freelander (2005) yesterday and am slowly bonding with it. There's a few things that have puzzled me, though many have been answered by browsing your amazing contributions on here (so thanks very much for all of those).

I found a copy of an owners manual online and that's been helpful too - though it has also got me a bit confused too as it is the US import version.

I was led to believe that my motor is an HSE version and that this was the top spec that year. However, I'm surprised that there are things in the manual that are missing in the car... for example, cruise control and an opening sunroof.

So I just wondered if anyone has any notes about the difference between the HSE and other models, and those between UK and US models?

Many thanks
Graham

The freelander story by James Taylor is a good book to get, if you want to learn the nuances of your modal
Like any vehicle you can get the Vin decoded by an online decoder or Land Rover themselves do it, sometimes for free, that'll tell ya what spec it is

HSE had the sunroof as standard, but I believe it could be ordered without the sunroof.
Cruise Control was an option, and only on the automatic, as the CC works in conjunction with the automatic gearbox ECU (called the TCM).
The SE was equipped almost as well as the HSE, missing the sunroof and full leather interior.

Got any pictures of it, inside and out? It's possible to tell what model it is from pictures of the outside, inside and console area. ;)

Any badges on the front wing? Obvious I know but just asking!!

Also

Does it have a non opening sunroof then? If so it's broken!!!

Thanks. I will take a look at the book.

No obvious badges on the front wings.
I have a feeling that the sunroof has been sealed and the switch replaced with a blank. It looks just like a plain window with no obvious mechanisms that have 'broken'. There is a strange piece of fabric inside in the centre of the front, which I will take a picture of tomorrow in the light!

Aha, so you DO have a sunroof ! A non opening window in the ceiling was never an option and so I guess yours has been disconnected due to a fault.
Switch may well have been blanked. It may have failed mechanically or electrically or both.
You have to decide if it is worth repairing, there are many threads, some good ones very recently on how to do this.

I only use mine to let the damp dog condensation leave the passenger compartment !!!

It should have the letters HSE on the front wings, just under the side repeater lenses.

Is it an HSE? Or just a base model that someone has put HSE seats in.
If it's a TD4 HSE, the centre panel each side of the heater controls should have no blank spaces, all 6 positions should be filled with the switches, as the HSE was fully loaded with everything, just like my SE.

OK... thanks very much guys... at least I am not feeling ripped off! It IS an HSE - there were some small badges that I'd not seen in the dark. On closer inspection, I am sure that the electric sunroof has been disabled, it looks as though some of the electric 'gubbins' has been removed and the glass sealed in. I don't figure that it is worth trying to refit, though I do like to be able to open the roof from time-to-time rather than rely on AC.

Thanks again, I'm sure there will be more daft questions to follow!

Best wishes
Graham

That's good then. ;)

It's pretty common for the sunroof to be disabled, as they get unreliable with age and lack of maintenance.

Didn't think there was an HSE in '98. Thought they were the Xe Xei Xedi type era. As you say though, the top of the range '90s cars were very basic though.
you are right my mistake it is a xei I think I will have to check the wifes log book it is what she was saying the other day look at the difference between mine and yours and yet mine was top of the range and so is yours .
