I seem to be chasing problems these days. I had a recon VCU fitted about 3 months ago and all was well. TD4 with 93k.

This week noticed a noise Luke a wheel bearing from rear - also had a shimmy on acceleration for a while.

Yesterday checked over underneath could feel or see anything loose etc. Loosened VCU hangers and reset.

Now shimmy has hone bit I have a loud drone from rear - sounds like diff but what do you guys think?

Question - if I drop the prop and VCU out will this stop any further wear on diff in case I have get a recon.

I am going to recheck the VCU alignment - would this cause the diff to groan/drone if it was miss-aligned?

Cheers

you can try and check wheel bearings with each wheel jacked up but can be hard to tell conclusively but if altering prop effected it ,it would lead you to diff ,they arent too bad to put fresh bearings on which is usualy all thats needed

That's useful. Do you think it worth dropping off the prop - would it have an effect on the diff. I was thinking it might then not be under load and if it still makes a noise it's wheel bearing.

When you say it's not too bad a job did you mean diff bearings or wheel

that would help diagnose ,generally thats what you would do,good thinking, nothings 100% but you need to logicaly arrive at the most likely

Great well it's on my ramps and I have tools ready so prop off. Just looked at RAVE and can see there is a taper bearing in the nose of the diff. Fingers crossed.

Time is tight so may get my friendly local mechanic to do that bit - easier on a lift than laying on the floor!

Cheers and thanks for the advice.

there are two taper bearings supporting pinion both should be done if one thought to be poor, most noisy diffs are down to a poor bearing or 2 ,and generally have to run a good bit to damage crown wheel and pinion

Well prop is off and I am testing it now - guess what - noise is still there.

Does that mean it is defo wheel bearings?

It is now starting to wow wow so may be a wheel bearing.

I have now also lost most of my clutch!!! I bled it a few weeks ago and it was fine - what next ?

Ok gentle ride home now and back out with the tools. Bearings gonna have to wait though.

hi angeloc, does the noise change when going round corners, left or right? also might be tyre noise, had same problem 6 months after i put 2 new tyres on the rear, found out when advised to change them.tim.

No I can't day it changes noise. I had new Tyres about 6 months ago as well. Kumo road Tyres new all round.

All a bit academic now I lost the clutch completely 30 mls from home to had to get RAC out - slave cylinder has gone. Bled it enough to get me home just so looks like another big job!

Just to close this post

Had a complete new clutch, release bearing, slave and Dual Mass Flywheel fitted - all that is great now

Noise turned our to be a badly worn rear nearside wheel bearing. Changed that and it's quiet and smooth

I am a happy man but now skint !!! Ha ha

Next job offside driveshaft then SRS light! Oh I love this hobby ( it wasn't a hobby but it is now!!!!! )

Its not a hobby , its an obsession.

The more you drive the car, the more you will hear, think you hear, think you might possible have heard.

Other people will get into the car and hear nothing, but you swear you can hear number 3 cyclinder, hydralic lifter, intermittently sticking at 2071 rpm when turning left between 11:30 and 11:35 on a tuesday.

Another case of Land Rover Enthusiast-itus.

No sorted the 3rd cylinder misfire I only use it before 11pm! Ha ha ;-) you are so right but isn't it great when you find the problem and sort it!?

There’s always a great sense of satisfaction at locating a fault and solving the problem. Either by replacing a part or logically creating a safe solution. For every problem I fix, there’s another ready to pop up and annoy after a short time. Hence the sarcasm from some at work about turning the radio up.
