I'm in a land far from home and I've bust my front diff.
I do have a spare on it's way here, and I have taken the old unit out.
In the consignment I have a paper gasket supplied, the old unit had rtv/silicone sealing the face where the diff and axle mate. The parts fiche shows a paper gasket but my workshop manual mentions rtv....
Not having rtv with me I'll use the gasket, but just wondering when the gasket fitting was dropped for rtv being used? I guess to quicken factory assembly rtv was introduced....

Would not be thinking that paper gasket was dropped as a time saver. It takes less time to fit the gasket than it takes to apply RTV. Either will do. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean.

I would use the gasket and put a smear of hylomar all the way round it both sides if you can get some - paper gasket on it's own should work but often weeps unless both faces are absolutely spot on perfect!

As above^^^^^^^^. I smear both sides with hylomar. Often the gasket will seal it, but sometimes they don't, and if they don't you will have to take it apart or put up with the weep.
