1991 Defender 110 TDI.
Got this several months ago. Had difficulty getting low range then. Lots of WD40 sorted that following advice from here. So been driving normally in high (with what I thought was no diff lock). Messed around today. Seems like it is probaby in diff lock all time (small lever across to left). If I bring it to the right then front propshaft spins but does not engage (but a bit rattly from front axle diff), rear propshaft does not do anything. In low ratio front propshaft spins v slowly but again does not engage.
Any suggestion. Could it still be things not engaging? Surely both propshafts should spin?? And what is the diff lock locking? The diff in the axle housings?
Lots of questions from one slightly confused!

Something is broken in your front axle. Could be anything from drive member splines to halfshafts or even the diff. You is going to have to get the spanners out.

i have a spare diff and shafts for the front end of an early 10 spline 90. Pm if you need owt got a really good diff reduced cos nowt landy is selling for money anymore

Which I did. With Jai's e-guidance it turn out to be the farside driving member. Shaft turning freely in it! Phew, can forget a diff change for a while. Is it wise to change CV with drive member or not. Splines look OK but the DM is virtually smooth

Glad I could of helped. I would order a new drive flange and gasket/RTV selant. Once changed and test run on the road ok I would find an empty car park put the landy in LOW box in OPEN (normal driving position) diff lock position go full lock and drive around and listen for any clicking or signs of immenant cv failure. I very much doubt you have damaged it but no harm in checking and you get to use low box aswell so its all good.
Well done chap Jai
