Hi, My X reg P38 Diesel developed an intermittent power loss a couple of weeks ago and now it has become permanent. I inspected the hoses and pipes as suggested and found the MAP pipe had come off the sensor, bought a new one and fitted it. Still the same.Replaced the MAP sensor with new and cleaned the MAF sensor following the correct procedures. Still the same. I was about to buy a new MAF sensor to eliminate that but at £180 thought it would pay to test the current one first. Please advise how I go about testing the MAF or any suggestions as to what the fault could be. Many thanks

Thank you for the advice, I had considered that as an option, my usual garage has the kit but I understand that this type of fault wouldn't necessarily show up so it would have been a pointless exercise. Will Leeds do as the centre of Yorkshire ?

Unplug it. Should run on default values. If it runs better then something up. Worth cleaning out the EGR and also the intercooler.

Talking of intercooler, you've checked all pipes out from turbo are secure and firm to touch?

Check the inside if the intercooler pipes they are known to delaminate mine you blow an egg inside which cut the power.

I unplugged the MAF as suggested and it seems to have rectified the fault so it would appear that the MAF is faulty. Can you recommend a source for a replacement please. I checked all hoses, removed & cleaned the EGR, I will consider cleaning the intercooler when it warms up a bit as it looks like a big job. All looks good apart from the usual BMW oil traces !
Thank you

Sorry, too new a car for me! I'd go genuine so that means the Stealer or Rimmer Bros. @Enthusiastman had a load of parts he never used for sale recently so he may have one.

How does it start when cold?
Have checked the lift pump in the tank. I had an Intermittent power loss until my intank fuel pump died full stop.
After I replaced it the problem went.
Not saying that's your issue bit as a thought.
;)

Hi Mark, thank you for the feedback, it appears to be the MAF sensor that's faulty, OUCH, just ordered a new one. Thank you

Welcome, P M is private message, envelope symbol top right.;) I have a MAF sensor in the garage, its off a 4.0 Gems don't know if its the same as the diesel.
No buddy the diesel MAFF sensors are different to the petrol ones. Had all this with my Diesel which blew up. Bought eveything to try and cure the fault but it ended up being a blown engine on number 6 pot/valve.

Yes i have all the bits for a diesel which are new. As most of you know on here i had big troubles with my TD P38 and it ended up as a blown engine number 6 pot/valve. If the O/P would like to PM me i will give my number and he can ring me for a chat about what i have. Its all listed on here in parts for sale and also currently all on ebay.
