Hi all in a previous thread iv asked about getting a 4.4 v8 diesel but whats going on with the bad press about diesels and the price difference i am now thinking about a supercharged rangie converted to lpg, are there any major things i should look for on a supercharged one. thanks.

jaguar engines hate LPG, the valves can't handle it..

From what i've read on the TDV8's EGRs tend to cráp out, turbos can go and intercoolor pipes tend to split.

Also avoid anything that has been chipped.

The 4.4 gets incredible MPG considering its powering a land yacht, gotta be something to do with that snazzy 8spd G'box ;)

The MPG will be more to do with engine development and the control electronics I'd bet. Of course the box and torque convertor control will be part of it.

Yes and there is that ;)

Mind you, if OP can afford a late model L322 i'm sure he'll be able to swallow up the Fuel costs, without needing LPG ;)

I'm paying 66ppl for LPG cars says 17.2 mpg petrol at the same place was 1.30 ppl so about 30ish mpg petrol eqivalant......guy I bought the car from was paying 52ppl for LPG. No brained the BMW 4.4 seems pretty bullet proof if looked after.

So, now you have the chance to compare the P38 to the L322 - dare we ask you what your thoughts of each are?

Your biggest issue with a 5.0 S/C (assuming your looking at a similar vintage to the 4.4tdv8) is the timing chains and guides, they appear to be getting bad for wearing/failing. However its a hugely impressive machine, as for LPG Its not advisable on an AJV8 without some sort of valve lubrication system. Personally I'm not a fan of gas and would rather run an engine on what it was designed for. The 4.4tdv8 though is mighty impressive. Dad manages a genuine 26mpg out of his on a mixture of all sorts of driving. Its possible to get close to 30mpg genuine on a run which is amazing for what it is.

I've had two 4.6 Thor's a 07 4.2 S/C L322 and bought an early 4.4 M62 L322 earlier this week. The P38 has a very rugged charm about it, everything is very mechanical, ABS pump running, engaging low range etc are all very obvious things that happen. In an L322 range change is undetectable. Quite uncanny if you are used to a P38, first time I drove an S/C L322 I just couldn't believe how good the brakes were for a Range Rover. They are much more car like but also much larger than a P38. I have a little trailer for going to the tip, can quite easily see it behind a P38 but behind the L322 its just invisible.

What is interesting is that the 99 4.6 and the 01 4.6 were quite different from a gearbox aspect, I can't find a reference but with the very last ones apparently more features were used on the gearbox to retard engine torque when engaging lockup, ergo the 01 was more refined. Again the 02 L322 whilst smooth there is more wind noise compared to the 07 Supercharged. Plus it just doesn't have anything like the punch of the later car. Interestingly though the 02 feels like its more solidly built and appears to strangely have less rust although they should be similar!

My thoughts so far on the l322 p38 comparrision. You can't compare them, I mean they are different machines with a similar DNA. As for a vanos issue/timeing guide problem we've just rebuilt one of these 4.4bmw m62 engines and it all works and I mean a proper rebuild. We did have a slight banks rattle to start with but cleaning out the vanos electric solinoid sorted that. It went in for mot today and passed.
I wouldn't think twice about doing guides/timeing chain on a 4.4 again or at least letting my mate john do it lol.
My p38 is a wonderful thing iv had to address every issue they suffer with I'm currently having the rear diff refurbished, I'm keeping both and will finally fit my LPG kit iv had sitting here for the last 3years in the new year because I'm so impressed with it on the l322. I have no rust issues on either only x3 faults on the l322. Ns rear window inop, os rear blower fan inop and lower wishbones needs replacing. Not bad for a car that was said to need a new engine.

The m62 is a nice sounding motor when compared to other V8s

I'm also in the middle of a rebuild on one..

The block was sent off and liners were pressed in..

only downside is there is the lack of material between each bore..

I hope to have it in, maybe in a few weeks..

That'll be fun.. ;)
