hi all,

can anyone tell me what could be wrong with my freelander. its got a 2 tdci.

the problem, when started and just on tick over the fume smell is really bad, to the point that you have to get out the road or turn it off.

when driving if the wind is the wrong way or any of the rear window open you can smell it , also if you following the freelander you can smell it.

there is no smoke at start up or if you rev hard.

what will be wrong ? could it be the cat ?

If it smells of unburned fuel then it's probably an injector not injecting correctly. Is there a misfire or loss of power as this also points to a faulty injector. If its the L series engine then it could also be the injection pump, TD4's don't suffer from overfueling if the HP pump becomes faulty only fuel leaks.

This looks like an old post but I wanted to add that my exhaust in (TDI 300) smells like vinegar. Bloody awful!
I do in fact have a leaking return pipe, but it seems that the smell is really coming from exhaust pipe, as even when cold in the morning it smells bad and it does not change during the day (as the engine heats up). I will fix my return pipe and report then.

have you checked under de gas-tank? mine (L Series too) came up with this leak a few weeks ago, part number WFH101840

Hi Landz - seems nobody understands you :)

Look at the exhaust flexi - if these break then the exhaust fumes will drift up and enter the cabin through the ventilation system

If its the case then you have the choice of changing the first part of the exhaust or welding an new flexi into the existing one
