Did all the Td6 models use the GM gearbox?

Just been looking at a few L322 Range Rovers, quite tempted! I know all about the problems with the GM gearbox. Did all the Td6 models use this gearbox or was this changed when they did the facelift in late 05?

Yes all had GM boxes until the 2006 onwards

There okay if they have been serviced well
But most don't get services hence they fail

I have a 56 plate td6 presumably one of the last. I'm pretty certain my independant service man does not look at the gearbox. Exactly what should he do so I can tell him. Thanks

Nothing can be done to prevent the autobox failing, not even oil/filter changes. Apparently, it is something to do with the valve block being made out of a "soft" aluminium which causes the boxes to fail.

Try www.fullfattrr.com for more info. It has been widely discussed over there. Apparently, the only permanent cure is a fancy valve block, which costs around £4k...

Ok but is there any sign that the gearbox is likely to fail or does it go all of a sudden. We tend to leave it in drive when stopped rather than neutral, will this also help it fail.

I admit to not having the tech knowledge a lot of the guys on here do BUT I work on the principle that if it was good enough to be writen in the handbook it's good enough to listen to.

@Rangie, PM sent. gearboxes can go anytime. Don't forget that we only hear of the ones that go wrong! There are lots out there that work fine every day..... You pays your money and takes your pick. Towing and hooning around wont help, but I've never had a problem with either of mine over the last 3-4 years if that calms your fears a bit.

@Oldun. Its normally the Torque converter that goes first. THis shows itself with vibrations similar to going over a cattle grid, plus revs rising adn no increase in speed. Changing the oil and filter before 100,000 miles can offset breakdown, although there is a school of thought that doing so releases all the crud that built up previously and hastens collapse. Personally I think changing the oil is worth it if done well before the 100,000 mile stage.

Leaving it In drive for a long time will definitely shorten the life of the gearbox !
I always shove it in neutral when stopped at lights, in traffic etc...

+1, I always put the gearbox in neutral when stopped at lights, etc. You can feel the vehicle straining a bit if you leave it in gear whilst stationary, which won't be doing it any good.

Did all the Td6 models use the GM gearbox?
